Free Science Events in Toronto for January 2015
The Science and Technology Department of North York Central Library compiles a monthly calendar of free science and applied science events in Toronto. Applied science includes health, gardening, pets and food; all subjects found in the department's collection. Here is the January calendar (PDF).
January's highlights include:
- January 8: Get Your Health Back on Track with Green Smoothies, join Cathy Russell as she shares how to build a proper green smoothie.
- January 14: The Science of Shakespeare, Dan Falk will explore Shakespeare's interest in the scientific discoveries of his time, with a particular focus on the changing conceptions of the cosmos, from Aristotle to Copernicus and Galileo.
- January 29: Resident-to-Resident Aggression in Long Term Care, part of the noon-hour seminars at the University of Toronto's Institute for Life Course and Aging.

January's highlights include:
- January 13: Ingredients: Understanding What's in Your Beauty Products (Part 1), at North York Central Library. This three-part series covers the basics of how to interpret product claims and ingredient lists for various beauty products. Part 1 covers the basic concepts and terminology in chemistry and biology as they relate to cosmetics and toiletries.
- January 19: Understanding Dementia and Alzheimer Disease, at Beaches branch. Join a representative from the Alzheimer Society of Toronto for an information session outlining signs and symptoms, risk factors, current research and programs and services available to individuals and caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer's disease or dementia.
- January 21: Your Brain in Action, at Toronto Reference Library. Humans surpass all other animals as well as robots when it comes to diversity and malleability of movements. Dr. Denise Henriques (Science and Health) explains how the brain's remarkable control systems make this possible. Part of a lecture series, Neuroscience: How Your Brain Lives, Works… And Dies, presented in collaboration with York University's Faculties of Science and Health.
- January 23: Removing the Terror from the Licence Renewal Process, at Don Mills branch. Are you, or someone you know, planning on driving over the age of 80? Worried about the mandatory renewal test? In this session, a representative from MTO will provide driving tips, talk about recent rules of the road and go over the testing requirements for the renewal process.
- January 26: How to Build Your Immune System Naturally, at Eatonville branch. Holistic nutritionist and homeopath Jocelyn McTavish teaches you how to build your immune system naturally.
