Free Science Events in Toronto for May 2015 |

The Science and Technology Department of North York Central Library compiles a monthly calendar of free science and applied science events in Toronto. Applied science includes health, gardening, pets and food; all subjects found in the department's collection. Here is the May calendar (PDF).

May's highlights include:

May 3: The Amazing Birds of the Park – Listen, watch, spot and identify resident and migratory birds with experienced birder Brain Bailey.
May 7: Cosmic Déjà Vu: Echoes from a Supernova – Discover what can be learned from light echoes in space.
May 15: Panel Discussion: Reproductive Health as an Environmental Issue – This evening's discussion will explore what we know about the endocrine disrupting chemicals in our waters, air, and consumer products, and our relationship to science, government, industry and environmentalism.

May 2: Listening for Black Holes: Einstein's Unfinished Symphony, at York Woods branch. Join Dr. Kipp Cannon for a talk on gravitational-wave astronomy.
May 6: The Hygiene Hypothesis: Is Playing in the Mud Good for Your Health?, at Brentwood branch. Graduate students from the University of Toronto will tackle this question and more as we explore the link between germs and disease.
May 9: Science Rendezvous, at various branches. An annual science festival that invites participants to engage in hands-on experiments and activities.
May 11: Manage Your Stress!, at Pape/Danforth branch. Recognize the signs and symptoms of stress, discuss the impact of stress on our health, learn strategies for preventing and coping with stress and try a relaxation exercise.
May 19: Intro to Python Programming, at Fort York branch. Learn how to create simple programs using the computer programming language, Python. You will learn about variables, functions, and IF statements to construct a simple text based game.
