Free Science Events in Toronto for June 2015
The Science and Technology Department of North York Central Library compiles a monthly calendar of free science and applied science events in Toronto. Applied science includes health, gardening, pets and food; all subjects found in the department's collection. Here is the June calendar (PDF).
June's highlights include:
- June 4: Your Brain on Acupuncture - Learn how acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine can help someone who is dealing with Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, concussions or paralysis.
- June 7: Spring Babies at the Zoo – Zookeeper Sonya Dittkrist introduces new animal arrivals at the High Park zoo.
- June 13: Leslieville Tree Festival – A celebration of the urban forest that includes activities for the whole family.

At the library, June's highlights include:
- June 10: Introductory Beekeeping, at Brentwood branch. A brief overview of what is involved in keeping honeybees.
- June 16: Healthy Cognitive Aging, at North York Central Library. Ryerson Professor Alexandra Fiocco will discuss the predictors and prevention of cognitive decline (decline in memory and thinking abilities). PhD student Katie Peck will discuss the effect of music on brain health.
- June 18: Exoplanets and the Quest for Extraterrestrial Biology, at Beaches Branch. Amaury Triaud, whose research has led to the confirmation of 48 new nearby exoplanetary systems, discusses how one finds a planet and the techniques that will soon tell us whether life forms have arisen on planets outside our solar system.
- June 25: Ingredients: Understanding What's in Your Beauty Products, at Queen/Saulter Branch. This workshop will cover the basic scientific concepts behind beauty products. Armed with this knowledge, attendees will learn the basics of how to interpret product claims and ingredient lists for various beauty products, and thus be able to make better, more
informed choices for themselves. - June 30: PowerPoint Basics, at North York Central Library. Learn to open, create and edit a simple presentation using Microsoft PowerPoint. Basic keyboarding and mouse skills required.
