Free Science Events in Toronto for March 2016
The Science and Technology Department of North York Central Library compiles a monthly calendar of free science and applied science events in Toronto. Applied science includes health, gardening, pets and food; all subjects found in the department's collection. Here is the March calendar (PDF).
March's highlights include:
- March 16: Moving to Mars? A Panel Discussion on the Ethics and Logistics – While Mars is the top candidate for hosting human settlers, significant ethical and logistical controversies surround the prospect of sending humans to the Red Planet.
- March 22: Air Pollution Effects on the Carbon Cycle and Surface Climate – A lecture from The Centre for Global Change Science at the University of Toronto.
- March 30: The Healthy Cities – Diabetes Prevention Project: New Insights on the Built Environment and Obesity-Related Diseases – In the search for population approaches to curb the rise in obesity, public health officials have turned their interest to the built environment as a potential target for public policies.

At the library, March's highlights include:
- March 2: A Doctor's Guide to Alternative Medicine: What Works, What Doesn't and Why, at North York Central Library. This presentation will be of interest both to skeptics of alternative medicine looking for hard evidence, and to those who are open to alternative medicine but want to understand its benefits and dangers.
- March 3: Chemical Exposures, at Eatonville branch. At this presentation, a Registered Holistic Nutritionist will explore chemical exposures in food, water and your environment, and how to limit your exposure that can be influencing your health and your weight.
- March 11: GIMP Basics: Image Editing Software, at Don Mills branch. In this hands-on class, you will learn to work with basic tools to resize, crop, modify colour, blur and add text to an image using MacBooks.
- March 12: Basic Bike Maintenance at Pape/Danforth branch. Learn the basics of day-to-day bike maintenance in this hands-on class. Topics include: safety checks, pumping your tires, tightening your brakes, lubing your chain and ensuring your bike is the right fit for you.
- March 17: Sushi Making for Teens at Palmerston branch. For teens 12 to 19 years of age, a fun and nutritious hands-on sushi-making class.
