Free Science Events in Toronto for May 2016
The Science and Technology Department of North York Central Library compiles a monthly calendar of free science and applied science events in Toronto. Applied science includes health, gardening, pets and food; all subjects found in the department's collection. Here is the May calendar (PDF).
May's highlights include:
- May 1: Ontario's Orchids: Perpetual Beauty Worth All Costs – Tom Shields, Southern Ontario Orchid Society, discusses how to protect and preserve Ontario's beautiful native orchids.
- May 7: Science Rendezvous – An annual festival that takes science out of the lab and onto the street. This year, there are events held by the University of Toronto, University of Toronto Scarborough and Ryerson University. Toronto Public Library will be at the Ryerson event with our 3D printer, Makey Makey and Arduino demos, science and technology themed storytimes, an innovative craft table, lots of giveaways and much more.
- May 12: Preventing Running Injuries: Separating Fact from Fiction – Answers to popular running questions, such as will running give you knee arthritis, will be discussed. Also, get tips on how to prevent injuries.

At the Library, May's highlights include:
- May 2: Ask an Expert: Balcony and Terrace Container Gardening, at Runnymede branch. Learn practical tips for successful container gardening with Toronto Master Gardeners' Elizabeth Stewart.
- May 3 – 11: Science Rendezvous, at various library branches. An annual science festival that invites participants to engage in hands-on experiments and activities.
- May 4: Finding Skin Care Products that Work, at North York Central Library. Learn about ingredients and formulations that tackle specific skin issues, how to identify products with effective amounts of active ingredients and tips on how to make your own skin care products.
- May 12: Physical Solutions to Posture Problems, Tension and Stress, at North York Central Library. Susan Green, a certified teacher of the Mitzvah Technique, will demonstrate practical ways to develop and maintain a healthy, youthful posture.
- May 19: SciChat Presents: Allergies Demystified, at York Woods branch. Learn about the causes and treatments for allergic reactions.
