Anne Giardini
Anne Giardini is a successful lawyer, corporate president, community volunteer, public speaker and author. She has two published novels, The Sad Truth about Happiness (which was shortlisted for the Amazon.ca First Novel Award in 2005 and an Audie audiobooks award in 2006), and Advice for Italian Boys (published in 2009); she is working on a third. For about three years, Giardini wrote a weekly column on literary matters for The National Post, and recently contributed to The Worlds of Carol Shields, a book of criticism published in 2014.
Giardini's most recent book, Startle and Illuminate: Carol Shields on Writing, is co-written with her second-oldest child, Nicholas. It is considered an essential work, drawn from Shields’ voluminous correspondence with other writers, her essays, notes, comments, criticisms and lectures. Giardini has been Chair of the Vancouver International Writers Festival and a board member of the Writers Trust of Canada. From 2008 to 2014, she was president of one of the largest lumber companies, Weyerhaeuser, and has served on many related boards. In June 2014, she became the 11th Chancellor of Simon Fraser University. She has received many awards and medals, including an award in 2014 as one of Canada’s Most Powerful Women, Top 100, from the Women’s Executive Network, and in October of last year, a lifetime achievement honour, presented at the Bi-annual Western Canada General Counsel Awards. Giardini is married and has three grown children, including Nicholas.
Nicholas Giardini
Nicholas Giardini is one of Carol Shields' 12 grandchildren, and second-oldest child of Anne Giardini. He earned an undergraduate degree in psychology while living in Ottawa and is a committed reader. He particularly enjoys reading fiction, especially works that explore character and self-perception.
