Teen Review: Melodrama
Review by Rifa, member of the Cedarbrae Youth Advisory Group
On June 16, Lorde released her much anticipated album Melodrama. After the release of her debut album, Pure Heroine, in 2013, Lorde grew out of her suburb in New Zealand and became a star touring all around the world. After a four-year-long wait, she chose to release her sophomore album.
I saw Lorde’s first album, Pure Heroine, as an album that covered the feelings of the youth, it was quiet and completely different from the pop music that was out, back then. I was very impressed with her first album and curious to see how her sophomore album would follow up, especially after such a long break. However, Melodrama did not disappoint me at all.
Melodrama consists of 11 songs with the two lead singles being Greenlight and Perfect Places. Majority of the songs in this album focus on relationships and heartbreak. Lorde describes Melodrama as being “a record about being alone… Both the good parts and bad.”
This album is definitely a different style from Lorde, she has stepped out of her comfort zone and has used more piano-driven music with more poppy beats. As well, the album includes a dynamic range in vocals. What I find the most incredible about this album is the lyrical content. Lorde has always been known to create some heavy and dark lyrics. I felt more connected to Lorde in this album, I feel like she really seemed to open up and she poured her entire soul into some of the songs. My favourite song on this album has got to be Sober. I love how it is lyrically, it focuses on the feelings of meeting new people and being unable to express her feelings or truly open up to them.
This album gets a 10/10 from me and I feel like I enjoy this album more than her first, largely due to the fact it shows such a different side of her with a more diverse range in tracks and music. I definitely recommend everyone to check it out and give a few of her songs a try!
