Downtown [where all the lights are bright]

When you say 'I might go downtown on Saturday', what do you mean? Are you going to the Eaton Centre/Yonge-Dundas Square area? City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square? Or do you mean you are going out to a club in the Entertainment District?

A recent post in blogTO discussed whether King Street between John and Peter might really be on its way to being the 'new downtown'. The successful revitalization of the King-Spadina neighbourhood, the opening of the TIFF Bell Lightbox and the efforts of the local BIA [which recently announced the winner of a design competition for a new square at King and John] have all focused attention on this part of the city. But, is this the area that springs to mind when you hear the word 'downtown'?

If you want to trace the history of the redevelopment of King-Spadina, which began with an innovative planning vision in the 1990's, as well as have a look at the 2009 Toronto Entertainment District Master Plan, drop in and visit us at the Urban Affairs Library in Metro Hall at 55 John Street.

[And if you don't remember the Petula Clark song in the title of this post, here's a flashback to the original that is guaranteed to keep you humming]
