Family History Research
Just got back from your holidays and your annual family gathering? Found some new clues for the family tree you’ve been working on? Inspired to look for information on a Toronto relative?
Did you know that the Toronto Reference Library has more than 130 historical newspaper titles including complete runs of most Toronto dailies from the 19th and 20th centuries? You could check for birth marriage or death notices there.
Want to know where an ancestor lived in Toronto? Special Collections, Genealogy and Maps Centre on the Toronto Reference Library's 4th floor has historical city directories dating back to the early 1800s. Older city directories usually listed the address and the occupation of the person.
If you live in Toronto you can come into the library to do you research. If you live outside the city or can’t come in, why not ask IntelliSearch to help you look up some genealogical information? If you know the death date of your ancestor, for example, researchers will search for 7 days after that date to see if they can find the obituary for you.
Open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM at 416-393-7241 or email intellisearch@torontopubliclibrary.ca . Rush service is also available. For more details please see http://www.torontopubliclibrary.ca/contact/ask-a-librarian/intellisearch.jsp
