If you plan on attending the lecture on Tuesday May 3rd by Professor Dan Ondrack entitled From the Silk Road to Modern Times: China's Path, you might be interested in checking out a fascinating film depicting the contrast between the old, rural China and the new, modernizing one in  Up the Yangtze.

Rise modern china You could also try The Rise of Modern China by Immanuel Chung-yueh Hsu, a classic describing the rise of the Qing dynasty through the last vestiges of foreign imperialism to the present day, or Jan Wong's China.  Although sometimes controversial, Wong's personal account of a country in transition is both highly readable and realistic.

This Thought Exchange lecture takes place at Toronto Reference Library's Beeton Auditorium on Tuesday, May 3, 1 – 3 pm.
