What refuge is there for the victim who is possessed with the feeling that there are a thousand new books he ought to read, while life is only long enough for him to read a hundred?

  1. Wow – great to know that someone so eloquently voiced what I think and it’s Wendell Holmes no less. I had cancer eight years ago and now I’m in a race to read all the good books on the planet. I wish there were someone who could weed out the bad ones and just give me the ones they know I’ll love.
My hold list is always maxed out. I have at least two books out simultaneously in case one is a dud. Life’s too short to reread books or persevere with bad ones.

  2. I can’t believe it – it’s SO good to know that I’m not the only one who feels this way!
My best strategy for handling this dilemma is to have made a decision to NOT continue reading a book I do not like. My rule of thumb is to give a book 1/3 of the total pages to grab me. If at that point I’m not liking it, I stop reading and return it to the library to allow me to move onto the next book on my “to-be-read” list, which currently stands at 372 book [but grows constantly].
