Celebrating Islamic History Month with a Talk
The Qur'an and the Mystical Dimension of History
October is Islamic History Month. On Tuesday October 30th at 7.00 p.m. in TRL's Atrium Auditorium, Todd Lawson, a faculty member of the Department of Near & Middle Eastern Civilizations of the University of Toronto, will give a talk: "The Qur'an and the Mystical Dimension of History".
In this talk, Professor Lawson will highlight a number of important
"sacramental" values inculcated by the Qur'an. Chief among these is the
distinctive idea of history that the Qur'an describes, centered on a beginning that
is purely spiritual or mystical in that it occurs before the actual creation of
the world.
This beginning is the special covenant described in Qur'án 7:172.
The subsequent unfolding of history, the role of prophets and messengers, the
response of humanity – whether individual or community – and the ultimate goal
of this historical process will also be discussed.
A general description of the
distinctive and sometimes daunting form and contents of the Qur'an will provide
necessary context for the lecture.
The event will run until the Library closes at 8:30, and there should be time for a question and answer period.
