This Weekend !! Canzine and the Languages & Literature Centre’s Zine Collection
The Canzine: Festival of Zines and Underground
Culture will be held on Sunday October 20 from 1-7pm at the 918 Bathurst
Centre.
Zines are self-made magazines or journals.
According to Broken Pencil: The Magaine of Zine Culture and Independent Arts a zine is “an independently published, not-for-profit publication. Although it usually represents the personal vision of a single creator, it can have many contributors. Although most zines are photocopied and hand stapled, some zines are professionally printed. What makes a zine a zine is its dedication to the independent transference of thought on a non-commercial basis.”
Toronto Reference Library has it's own zine collection located in the Languages & Literature
Centre near the desk on the 4th floor. The collection currently holds
about 800 zines (and growing.) Zines are arranged alphabetically by
title.
The collection is grown primarily by donations. Several donations from Broken Pencil magazine have provided the basis for the collection. Some titles have been reviewed in Broken Pencil as well.
The library also selects items from Canzine. Most of our selections either deal with Toronto or come from Toronto artists and writers.
Looking for more? Check out the Toronto Zine Library at the Tranzac Club on 292 Brunswick Avenue.
And be sure not to miss Canzine in October!
Extra Extra:
Alison at Broken Pencil sent us a message about
the Canzine Symposium, “a creative skillshare for zinesters and other creators
of all stripes” happening the day before the big event on Saturday October 19th.
The day promises to
have “a ton of really cool workshops this year, including a grant-writing
workshop, a workshop about dealing with bad reviews, and a workshop about the
history of activism in graphic arts, zines and comics” There’s also a zine swap lunch and micro-speed
talks on topics like tabling, social media and education.
