"The First Green Wave: Pollution Probe and the Origins of Environmental Activism in Ontario"

First Green Wave

Ryan will trace the rise of Toronto's environmental movement through the story of Pollution Probe, one of Canada's pioneering environmental activist organizations. Founded in 1969 by students and faculty at the University of Toronto, Pollution Probe confronted Toronto's City Hall over its use of pesticides, Ontario Hydro over air pollution, and the detergent industry over pollution of the Great Lakes. The success of these actions inspired the founding of other environmental organizations across Canada.

Ryan O'Connor received his Ph.D. at the University of Western Ontario. He is a Research Associate at the Frost Centre for Canadian and Indigenous Studies at Trent University, and is an Associate Member of the Centre for Environment, Heritage and Policy at the University of Stirling (Scotland). The First Green Wave is his first book.
