eh List: Andrew Pyper
You are invited to join us on Thursday, June 22 at 7 pm, in Beeton Hall at Toronto Reference Library, for Andrew Pyper: A Real-Life Monster. Andrew Pyper is a critically-acclaimed and best-selling author of nine works of fiction, including eight novels. This event will conclude Toronto Reference Library's participation in the spring 2017 eh List Author Series, Toronto Public Library’s celebration of writers from across Canada. Pyper will be introducing us to his latest work, The Only Child.
Lost Girls, Pyper's first novel, was published in 1999. It won'the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel, and was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year 2000. His works have continued to garner praise. His next novel, The Trade Mission, was one of the Toronto Star’s Ten Best Books of 2002; The Wildfire Season was a Globe and Mail Best Book of 2005; and The Killing Circle, a national bestseller in Canada, was a New York Times Best Crime Novel of the Year. The Guardians was a Globe and Mail 100 Best Books of 2011, and The Demonologist, also a bestseller in Canada, was given the Best Hardcover Novel award by the International Thriller Writers and was selected for the Globe and Mail’s Best 100 Books of 2013 and Amazon’s 20 Best Books of 2013. His seventh novel, The Damned, was an Amazon Ten Best Books of the Month Pick.
Three of Pyper’s novels, including The Demonologist and The Damned, are in active development for feature films. When awarded the Grant Allen Award for Canadian Crime and Mystery Writing in 2013, his work was described on Scene of the Crime as “psychologically intense, and often frightening”.
Pyper was born in Stratford, Ontario. He has a BA and MA in English literature from McGill, and, while he has never practiced, a law degree from U of T. Past Writer-in-Residence at Trent University, Pyper has also taught creative writing at U of T and Colorado College. He lives in Toronto.
We send thanks to the Canada Council for the Arts for their support of the eh List series, as well as our media partner, The Toronto Star.
