Toronto Public Library Celebrates Black History Month
Free programs, concerts & plays at branches across the city
TORONTO (Tuesday, January 28, 2014) – Toronto Public Library invites all Torontonians to celebrate Black History Month at branches across the city during February. A slate of free author visits, plays, poetry events, drumming and dancing programs, storytellers and historians will help Toronto celebrate the heritages, traditions and cultures of this vibrant community.
This year’s Black History Month programming will kick off with a Calypso Gala party featuring many of the talented performers on offer at branches all over town. Hosted by George Elliot Clarke, the Gala will include cameos by Dan Hill, Andrea Thompson, Seth-Adrian Harris, Kenny Robinson, Motion and EddiedaoriginalOne (January 31, 6:30 pm, Toronto Reference Library).
Other key events on the program this year include:
- Gemini award winning film maker Seth-Adrian Harris (Feb. 4, 1:30 pm, Palmerson)
- A Calypso Party with Roger Gibbs and Shak-Shak (Feb. 11, 6:30 pm, Annette Street)
- A concert with comedian Kenny Robinson (Feb. 8, 2 pm, Maria A. Shchuka)
- Two presentations of The Great Black North poetry anthology with a host of Toronto’s best black poets (Feb. 20, 5:30 pm, Downsview and Feb. 26, 6:30 pm, Riverdale).
- The first Toronto Urban Book Expo encouraging new writers of urban fiction (Feb. 9, 1 pm, Malvern)
- The new and sensational film Bob Marley: The Making of a Legend (Feb. 20, 7 pm, York Woods).
And discover the richness of Toronto Public Library’s Rita Cox Black & Caribbean Heritage Collections, located in four branches across the city.
