Regeneration by Pat Barker

RegenerationIn 1917, poet-soldier Sigfried Sassoon composes a letter to Parliament protesting the war. His letter is interpreted as a symptom of a nervous breakdown and he is diagnosed with shell-shock. Sassoon is sent to Craiglockhart War Hospital in Scotland for treatment of this condition. Army psychiatrist W.H.R. Rivers is assigned to Sassoon’s case. Rivers is a humane and compassionate doctor who is tormented by the suffering of his patients. He is also conflicted by his reluctance to treat patients so that they can return to a war he no longer supports.

Other patients in treatment include poet Wilfred Owen, Billy Prior, who suffers from mutism, and Anderson, a surgeon who is now unable to cope with the sight of blood.

Pat Barker used her step-grandfather’s World War I experiences as inspiration for her novel. Regeneration was nominated for the 1991 Man Booker Prize and is the first book of the Regeneration Trilogy.
