Today's featured agency is 519 Church Street Community Centre . "The 519 is a meeting place and focal point for its diverse downtown communities. Within a supportive environment, it responds to the needs of the local neighbourhood and the broader Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transsexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTTQ) communities by supplying resources and opportunities to foster self-determination, civic engagement and community participation." The 519 is based upon the following core values, viz.:

"

  • An anti-oppression social justice framework
  • A secular, politically non-partisan approach to all issues
  • A non-judgemental stance in dealing with all its stakeholders
  • Recognition and celebration of diversity
  • Respect for individual dignity and value  "

In keeping with its vision, the 519 works towards fulfilling:

    • Meeting community needs through increased and effective programming
    • A supportive workplace based upon equity with diverse Board, staff members and volunteers
    • A successful advocate on issues of importance to its cultural and geographic communities

    • A visible, positive profile with leadership and broad recognition

    • A stable and wide resource base to carry out its work
