What Did We Read Last Week?

July 5, 2010 | Alan H. | Comments (39)

I read Inventory from our booklist for a post that will come out later this week.  I've been a long-time reader of The Onion, of which A.V. Club (where most of the lists originally appeared) is a part.  More on the book (in easy-to-read list form) in my post on Wednesday.

Other books I read last week:

Continuing to read Invincible by Robert Kirkman.  The only superhero series I actively keep up with these days–a fresh, somewhat revisionist take on the "teen superhero" genre.  I also read the first volume of the Twin Spica manga (which we don't currently have in our catalogue, but I hope we'll get–it's excellent).

Finally reading The Judging Eye by R. Scott Bakker, the first book in the second trilogy of his tough, brutal, philosophical fantasy epic.  Start with The Darkness That Comes Before if this sounds like it appeals to you (I'd recommend this for older teens, not the younger crowd–it's pretty brutal in places).

Reread some old Clive Barker horror novels.  His YA series starting with Abarat is excellent–fantasy with a lot of horrific elements.

What have the rest of you been reading?

  1. I finished “The Glass Castle” last week. I didn’t expect to like it much because it is a memoir, and I tend to not enjoy biographies as much as fiction novels but this one I REALLY enjoyed.

  2. i finished reading ‘the confessional’ . this book is so interesting. you’ll be cringing until the last page 5/5. 😀

  3. Last Week, I read the Mediator by Meg Cabot…which is a really good book to read for fun :)… I read Daughters Of Eve, a book that’s good if you want a more serious topic…and Vampire Diaries was another good read

  4. Last week I read “A Great and Terrible Beauty”, “Rebel Angels” and “The Sweet Far Thing” by Libba Bray. They are the Gemma Doyle trilogy, and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. I highly recommend it.

  5. I finished reading “Your Heart Belongs to Me” by Dean Koontz and “The Broken Window” by Jeffrey Deaver, both mystery books. I liked Deaver’s novel better because there was a lot more suspense. It’s about a data mining corporation and a killer who knows absolutely everything about his victims and the people he frames. Quite a wake up call about privacy in this century.

  6. I finished reading this awesome book called the ‘Kid’s Almanac’ by a group of authors named, Elaine Pascoe, Deborah Kops, and jenifer Morse.
When I first looked at it, I thought it was just a boring book about some facts that no one even cared about. In fact, when I finished this book, I figured out that it was actually a awesome book that lists some of the coolest facts a person could ever know.
At least, that’s what I learned from this book. Now it’s your turn to see if I am telling the truth….Come on, and try this book out, and enjoy yourself 🙂

  7. I finished a book called “Outliers” by Malcolm Gladwell. The story of success has never been more clear and open for interpretation than ever before.

  8. I read the “Message in a Bottle” by Nicholas Sparks. I can almost say that I didn’t put the book down!!! The book is about a man who loss his wife in an accident and a divorced mother caring for her son. Coming across the bottle while running, Theresa is touched by the letter Garrett wrote to his departed wife that he sent out to sea. With the help of two more letters and a push from her friend, she is determined to meet the man who wrote the letters and hoping to get a second chance at love. Made me cry 🙂

  9. i finished reading a book called neon genesis evangelion: angelic days by fumino hayashi.its a manga with only 6 volumes

  10. It’s sooo exhilarating knowing that someone else read those books. I read them like a year ago and the were absolutely amazing!! I couldn’t get enough of it. The ending was a bit sad but pivotal. I’d love to hear ur perspective on this series. I highly recommend this series to everyone.

  11. A few days ago, I finised reading “My Sister’s Keeper,” a book I’ve been meaning to read for quite a while now. I really admire the way Jodi Picoult writes her books, because her research is so thorough and the emotions in her books relate so closely to real people that at times I forget that I’m reading fiction. Her ability to put our complex thinking into words is simply commendable. Her books are just too sad though, and after reading My Sister’s Keeper, I felt as dejected and sad as the characters themselves. Despite that, I recommend everyone to read at least one of Picoult’s books.

  12. I’m currently reading “A Short History on Progress” by Ronald Wright. It’s a history book that a friend recommended to me, and it’s very good. It brings up some very interesting ideas and is very thought provoking. For example, it mentions how we’ve made great progress with “bangs.” We’ve had little bangs, fireworks, hunting rifles… and then found a bigger bang in the atom at the end of World War Two. That’s one of the possible traps of progress.
    Interested? READ IT! 🙂

  13. Just finished reading “my little red book” by Rachel Kauder Nalebuff. Not my favourite read; the stories get repetitive and predictable about halfway in. The book itself is a collection of tales of girls’ experiences with their monthly you-know-whats… Nuff said!

  14. I finished Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt and started on it’s sequel ‘Tis. they are both amazing memoirs of the author growing up in poverty in Ireland and later on his move back to America where he tries toget a good job and go to University. Truly an eye opening piece that educates about how it is to live life in poverty, with many siblings and not much to live on.

  15. Yeah I just discovered them and I really like them! The ending was sad, but I kind of thought it wouldn’t end happily because it didn’t seem to be the type of book where everything fell into place at the end. When I first started reading it was a bit confusing but as I read more I found that it wasn’t as confusing once I realized what was going on!

  16. I finished reading ‘The Last Song’ by Nicholas Sparks.
I just all of you guys read it, it’s really good & watch the movie too!
But I really prefer the book rather than the movie. The book usually is more descriptive, & they don’t squish the information to two hours only. (:

  17. I’ve read “Heir Apparen’t”.
I really recommend it to all who like video games, because it’s a virtual one where you have a futuristic world where most good games are banned due to a law. So you have this girl who disobeys it and goes into a “Museum of Games”; it’s basically an arcade. So there is this new game, called “Heir Apparen’t” (thus the title of the book) where you put on some gear, and you are transported into the game where you try to win the favour of characters you meet and get a favourable ending, basically the crown and the throne. But for the girl, there’s a twist. I really liked the idea of the virtual game world~

  18. I just finished reading ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” by Stieg Larsson. It was originally written in Swedish and its an amazing novel which has been made into a movie. The movie is not so great but the book is phenomenal!

  19. I just finish “Kiss me, Kill Me” and “Kisses and Lies” all by Lauren Henderson. THESE BOOKS were PHENOMENAL!!! I would totally recommended to people who likes romance novels but with a twist of mystery. I also read “Then A-List” by Zoey Dean,it is the first book to the “A-List” series. Right now i am obsessed with this series. I would recommanded to girls who really enjoyed the “Gossip Girl” and “the It Girl” series…hope you will take the chance to try these books out!!! 🙂

  20. Last week, I read Gone by Michael Grant. It was a really intense thriller and kept me on the edge the entire time!

  21. Last week, I finished The Abortionist’s Daughter. My friends and I were using it to do research on the topic of abortion for an extracurricular project. It was very interesting and gave us some insight into the abortion controversy as well as the technicalities behind the procedures.
The book itself was actually a mystery. The author kept a quick and invigorating pace throughout the book so it made both an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable read.

  22. last week i read 4 of the Clique books. they’re about a group of girls and the drama (boys and friends) they go through in their everyday life. i thought it was an okay book but i’ve read better.
i would recommend the books to girls between 9-13.

  23. I loved that book!
I was torn between the paren’ts and the sister,
and the ending definitely caught me offguard.

  24. I’m reading the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, about a bounty hunter(Stephanie) getting into complicated situations, while torn between her attractive bounty hunter mentor and an attrative cop. I think it’s a great mix of humour, romance, action, and a little bit of mystery – read it !

  25. OH!
I’ve been wanting to read this book, is it a good read?
I’ve also been wanting to read the other two : “The girl who playes with fire” and i think the 3rd one is called the girl who kicked a hornets nest or something.

  26. Well last week i ready Beautiful Monster, i always have trouble remembering the authors name, since i already returned the book. but it was a wonderful story about a boy challenging the norm within his hometown to be with a girl. though it was a teen romance i think it really brought out the idea of how shallow teenagers can be even without realizing. definately a great read

  27. Last week I read some Ivy and Bean books. It’s about 2 girls who meet by doing something naughty and become best friends and go through alot of adventures. It’s a fun book for kids my age 😀

  28. I’m currently reading The Hound of Baskervilles–and am getting spooked by it, surprisingly. I’ve heard of a few of the books that you guys are reading, but haven’t read them myself. There seems to be quite a few female protagonists, eh?

  29. i just finished reading shadow of doubt by norah mcclintock. usuallly her books are about a murder, but this ones isn’t. i love all the books she writes 🙂

  30. I just finished reading the last book in the Mediator series, Twilight by Meg Cabot. It was a really great book! I loved how in the ending was a happy ending. I hate when it’s sad at the end…

  31. I just finsh readking Thirst No.1. It’s an awesome book to read and I am waiting for number two come along as well

  32. i read the the wish list by eoin colfer. i also read airman and artemis fowl, the time paradox. thjese were AAAAAMAZING!!!! eoin colfer is a genious! i reccomend these books they qare seriously good!

  33. i read “Picture Perfect” by Jodi Picoult. the novel was pretty long and there were some parts of the novel that was not necessary to be in it.
i just finished reading “Blue Moon” by Alyson Noel. The storyline was good. There was suspense and mystery in the novel. And the novel ended in a cliffhanger. So now i’m waiting for “shadowland” to come in from the library to continue the series. i recommend this series.

  34. Sorry im replying so late!
Yes, it is an amazing book, i know for a fact that you will enjoy it as i did. It was my English teacher who actually recommended this book to me. I’ve read the second book ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’, and im soon going to start reading the third ‘The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest’. So far im loving it, if you plan on reading these books please don’t hesitate and go for it!

  35. I just finished reading Cory Doctorow’s ‘Little Brother’ novel and let me tell you i enjoyed it a lot! I never thought i’d be interested in this kind of book because it invoves computers! i don’t like reading theories or facts about computers and codes and especially not in a novel but to be honest this was different and i really liked it, im definitely looking forward to reading more of Doctorow’s novels.
If anyone has read any of Doctorw’s novels and would like to recommend it to me please feel free to do so! Thanks!

  36. i just finished millennium snow by bisco hatori. its a good manga series but i cant seem to find the third book of the series anywhere
