What We Read Last Week
My main read last week was Canadian writer Emily Schultz's incredible Joyland, set in small-town Ontario in 1984 and framed by the first generation of video games. I'm slightly too young to have been a part of that scene (I'm a child of the original 8-bit Nintendo & the Sega Master System), but so much of this novel's depiction of adolescent video game fixation rang true for my own experiences. An amazing, dark, powerful novel. Highly recommended!
I've also been rereading volumes 1-5 of Scott Pilgrim in anticipation of the sixth and final volume's launch this week. Yay! Here is my sweet Scott Pilgrim avatar I made after Tatted Librarian's post about the avatar creator:

What did everyone else read last week?
Alan H. is a web librarian at Toronto Public Library. He actually does have a pair of shoes like that, but they're a little too small and he doesn't wear them much.

my have been reading the book called: “The Tin Princess” by Philip Pullman. The story takes place in the late 1800 where a london-slum child turn up as the crown princess of Razkavia. This girl must use her wit and surviving skill as a slum to save her country from falling into the wrong hand. This stroy have vividly painted many unforgettable scences in my mind. An amazing piece of work! well done Philip Pullman!
I am a huge fan of that series! I’ve been glad to see a lot of people discovering it after reading the “His Dark Materials” trilogy & looking for more Pullman.
I finished reading “Wanted” by Sara Shepard… It was awesome, XD but too bad it was the last book in the series… :'(
@Alan H: Do you really have orange hair? just wondering…
ahh i’m a huge fan of the “His Dark Materials” trilogy!!! and I’ve never heard of “The Tin Princess” so I will for sure check that out π
I’m so excited for the Scott Pilgrim book midnight release today! π
Any librarians going?
Last week I read all three of The Mortal Instrument Series! I found them AWESOME and addicting. They were written very well and they had a very interesting plot, which captured the readers attention almost immediately. I was previously a HUGE fan of The Twilight Saga but not anymore JAce Wayland is the one for me! π
This book specifically about a young girl who is a Shadowhunter, she is the daughter of the biggest rebel in the ShadowHunter world, her mother however has kept her unaware of her past my having a warlock (a wizard) wipe her memory of all these things! Her mother is kidnappped by her powerful father who remains unknown to her, she has to then search in a world that is hidden and umimaginable to her. With jace she goes to the ends of the Earth for the right thing adn to save her mother! “_’
I read Nora Roberts: Blue smoke which my friend recommended to me and I must say that the story captured my attention from the start and it keeped me wanting more. It’s about a young girl named Reena Hale who had to watch her family’s’ restaurant burn to the ground thus beginning her love/hate relationship with fire. When she grows up she becomes an a member of the police department but her past comes back to haunt her again. Enjoy!!!
Hmmm what I read last week? Last week was manga week for me :3
I read Honey Hunt vol.4, Prince of tennis, Trinity blood, La Corda d’oro, Ristorante paradiso, Gakuen Alice and many others. Enjoyed them all. ^___^
One of the books I read last week was The Fetch by Laura Whitcomb (the author of A Certain Slant of Light). It’s set in Russia, during the time of the Russian Civil War (I think). The story’s main characters are Calder, a “Fetch” (Fetches are ghosts who escort souls into heaven) and Princess Anastasia and Prince Alexis (the two unfound bodies from the Romanov family slaying). Calder loses his key to open the door to heaven so he and the two siblings go travel around the world in search for the keys.
This week, I just finished reading The Forbidden Game by LJ Smith. Since she was the writer for the Vampire Diaries and they were wildly popular, I decided to go out on a wing and try it out. I really loved the plotline and how there were three parts to the story without it being too repetitive. It’s about a girl named Jenny who is intrigued by a game and the boy behind the register who sold it to her. It was supposed to be a game they play for her boyfriend’s birthday party but it turns out to be more than a game. Playing it becomes way more than doing it just for fun; it becomes the group’s worst nightmare because they are playing it for their lives. And not surprisingly, the “boy” behind the register, Julian, is involved. A good read; try it! π
I finally forced myself into reading the Twilight saga. At first I thought it would be bad but since I started reading it I couldn’t stop. I read 400 pages in 2hrs!! I am currently on Eclipse…. The series overall so far is excellent. I have one question do any of the library branches have Eclipse-Stephanie Meyers because it didn’t show on my computer. I would recommend this series!!
I recently read a graphic novel called “The Photographer.” It documents the journey of a cameraman who has been hired by the MSF (Doctors Without Borders) and I find the story very insightful. It’s a great read, the graphic is phenomenal (because it incorporates real photographs taken) and I enjoyed the it very much.
It’s not quite the anime-character bright orange shade of the avatar, but fairly close. π
i read “the death and life of charlie st cloud” last week. now, i’m wondering how this novel can become a movie when you consider the events that happens in the novel
OMG, are you looking forward to the movie???
I can’t wait!!! XD
*Zac Efron*!!! ^_^ LOL
I read the house of the Scorpion. it’s about a drug kingdom in the near future. it’s a good book! but i haven’t seen the movie yet.
oh hey your talking about the Night world series right? I love those series they are really good and “The forbidden Game” is the one i have yet to read and i’ll be sure to read it, you make it sound really good.
Recently I finished reading a book called Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater. Shiver is a really good book I would recomend it to anyone who loves a good romance. The overall storyline for Shiver is really captivating and will have you hanging on to every word. The book talks in several different perspectives, meaning that you’ll read about serveral chacters’s perspectives throughout the novel. The story is about a girl named Grace who watches a wolf, named Sam who watches her back. Until fate brings them together and slowly they begin to fall in love. And Sam the wolf is force to fight to stay a human in order to be with his one true love, Grace.
I read The Book of Negroes. Makes me feel lucky to be living in todays world when people act more civilized towards each other.

Actually, I heard cassandra Clare was doing a fourth book in the series because her ending didn’t resolve the entire plot. I find the series equally addictive and I really hope she does continue it!
i haven’t read a book lately, daaah.
i feel bad! i’ll make up for it this week !
hope everybody is enjoying their week so far !
I recently read “Struts and Frets” By:Joe Skovron, a book recommended for week one.
I recently read “Struts and Frets” By:Joe Skovron, a book recommended for week one.
I read O, Juliet by Robin Maxwell.
I’m reading (but haven’t finished) Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. I figured that this really well-written play (itβs no surprise that it’s well-written, since it’s Shakespeare…) is too famous to not read. π
to Karen: haven’t read that one but I really liked The Man who Ate the 747, also by Ben Sherwood.
I’m re-reading Naoki Uraswa’s Monster series.
I read lots of books!! I love reading teen books they are so interesting!!! I read 3 books last week. π they were: Deception by Lee Nichols, Need by Carrie Jones, and Glimmerglass by Jenna Black.
they were so interesting. I loved them!!! <3<3
THAT BOOK WAS AWESOME…..I LOVE IT!!!
I read that book too, did you like how Sara Shepard ended the series?
Last week I read Bone by Bone By: Carol O’Connell, and now I’m half-way through re-reading the final book in the Harry Potter series (The Deathly Hallows) by J.K.Rowling.
I have also read Deception, it is a great book!
I recently read Libba Bray’s ‘A Great and Terrible Beauty’.This book is a real page turner. It’s about a girl who has a supernatural power which she had thought were probably something of her imagination or hallucination. Then later on she founds out that her mother had a link to it as well and she had known about it all along but had decided to keep it a secret.’A Great and Terrible Beaty’ is a very compelling novel that will get you hooked no matter what, I highly recommend everyone to give this book a try.
Read Byzantine by Stephen Lawhead, a tremendous historical journey of a monk’s journey with vikings, kings, princes, sheiks, etc.
Its a big book but well worth it.
Not all Lawhead’s books are good, but this one is.
I just finished reading Stolen by Lucy Christopher. Despite its pretty and light-hearted cover, it’s definately NOT a conventional teen read, as it deals with subjects such as abduction and the signs of Stockholm Syndrome.
Gemma, 16, is abducted by her stalker and in the form of letters, she writes to her kidnapper, detailing the whole experience. Without spoiling too much, it’s not what you’d call a “typical abduction”.
I love the author for coming up with such an interesting concept, and I think she did a fairly good job of executing it. Gemma’s voice was real, and it was beautifully written. The details were vivid without sounding tedious and the plot moved at a good pace, which kept me reading.
Thank you Lucy Christopher for relieving me of my previous bad-book reading streak.
I read it as a part of the school curriculum and was one of the only people who actually loved it. I admit, it’s not easy to read, as I had to refer to the foot notes every other sentence but once I did finally understand what was being said, I thought the story was absolutely brilliant.
last week i read the manga witch hunter by cho jung man. its a great manga series, i loved it
last week i also read maximum ride: saving the world and other extreme sports by james patterson. its the third book of the series and the books are all awesome! im on the fourth book now π (maximum ride: the final warning)
last week (and still this week) I’ve been reading an awesome manga series called Shugo Chara by manga-ka (manga author) duo, known as Peach-Pit. It’s an amazing manga that shows how a strong a kid’s dream can be physically shown through an egg that represents their heart’s dreams. Really cute and heart-warming, you also learn valuable lessons with a side of laughter
I really enjoy the word out 2010 summer reading program. It’s a great way to encourage kids to read more books! I have some book recommendations for 13 yr olds. My favourite teen novel is United We Stand by Eric Walters. This is the sequel to We All Fall Down by the same author. United We Stand follows the aftermath of the Sept. 11 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York. This is a great read. Go to your local library now!
Hi. I think that the Harry Potter books are definitely great reads- especially the 4th 6th and 7th. For any Post-Harry-Potter stories try the Tales of Beedle the Bard or Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them along with Quidditch Through the Ages.
I really enjoyed reading The Series of Unfortunate Events books along with the first two books in the H.I.V.E series. Lois Lowry is also a great author of many books such as The Giver and Gathering Blue. The Word Out Program is a great way to read many great books and win cool prizes, along with even getting library fines excused! To join the program go to your local library.
The Jane/Sheppard Library has that book. Although I can’t find “Breaking Dawn.” Try placing a hold so that that book can be sent to your local library. But hurry! The “Twilight” books have lots of holds on them! The last book had 100 holds on it last time I checked.
I also Enjoyed the Hunger Games and I think Catching Fire is a great sequel to the book.
