Zombies are infecting the Vampires

I’m a huge zombie fan.  One of my fellow Word Out bloggers spend many a night watching zombie flicks and talking about other undead literature.  In fact, I love zombies to such a degree that not only do I help organize the annual Toronto Zombie Walk, but I've also adopted the habit of typing in horror-speak to most of my fellow fiends (friends).  Examples:

Fiend – friend
Ghoul Day- Good Day
Meating – Meeting
Sin-searly – Sincerly
and on and on and on.

Typing in horror relies a lot on puns. Campy?  Absolutely, but I love that stuff.

I am so excited that the Toronto Public Library and the Toronto Zombie Walk will be doing some workshops from now until the end of October on how to make your own cheap zombies costumes and other horror make up.
This week kicked off the start of these workshops, my fiend in severed arms, Thea Munster – who also started the Toronto Zombie Walk eight years ago, will be showing how to create a great Zombie costume using everyday household items.  This program will be repeated in a couple of different locations.

In honour of these deadly programs, here are some of my favourite zombie titles, this list is by no means exhaustive.

  1. The
stupidest angel : A heartwarming Christmas tale of Terro
    r by Christopher
    Moore
  2. Zombie
    Raccoons and Killer Bunnies
    (a collection of short stories)
  3. I kissed a zombie and I liked
    it
    by Adam Selzter
  4. The
zombie handbook : how to identify the living dead and survive the coming
    zombie apocalypse
    by Rob Sacchetto
  5. Marvel Zombies Series (Graphic Novels)

When Tatted Librarian (aka Adele) is not yelling "Slayer" at random intervals, she spends most of her free time on facebook writing out horror status updates.  Her one eyed cat, Slayer, is never impressed with this behaviour.

  1. Personally,I prefer vampires. But zombies are cool too. They should make more zombie movies and books.

  2. Is there a schedule to find out which locations will be having these Zombie events ? I’ve been to (and loved) the Toronto Zombie walk a couple years back and would love tips as well as hanging with more zombie fans ! šŸ™‚ I’m in Scarborough though….are there any out this way ?
You listed a couple of titles I have yet to read, will have to look into them ! šŸ™‚

  3. Never Slow Dance with a Zombie, Zombie Queen of Newbury High, Never Slow Dance with a Zombie, the Generation Dead Trilogy (Daniel Waters) and Breathers: A Zombies Lament are also fun reads.

  4. I am not particularly obsessed with vampires and zombies, but I have a keen interest for the horror genre. I enjoy reading horror books and telling horror stories! Just wondering, does anyone have good recommendations?

  5. I have a longer list of zombie materials in the library catalogue that I would be happy to pass along to anyone.
@Minhal -Supernatural Horror? Christopher Pike, Darren Shan, I really love World Wide Zed.. it is not a comedy, but more of a thriller read.
but I think that there was a really good thread in one of Alan’s Post about some horror/thriller authors. Norah McClintok is a great thriller writer.
@Jeanette, I can post those dates as soon as I can find them all, but I will keep you in the loop.

  6. I’m not obsessed with zombies, but I do love vampires and werewolves! I also enjoy watching horror movies like The Grudge.

  7. Thanks! I have read most of Norah McClintock’s books and would definitely agree with you that she is a great thriller/mystery writer.

  8. I have never been to the Toronto Zombie Walk but it sounds really cool.:D Is there a schedule to find out when and where there is going to be a Toronto Zombie Walk?

  9. Toronto Zombie walk? Never heard of it but it sounds cool. Where and when is it? Some of the ghoulish books I have read are “The thief of always” by Clive Barker and The twilight series. I loved Clive Barkers style of conveying the scary details in his book. I look forward to reading more of his books!

  10. I’m so-so with horror. My sister, on the other hand, avoids it like the plague, and my family doesn’t exactly watch horror movies. We’re a family movie type of family.
The “I kissed a zombie and I liked it by Adam Selzter” seems to be sort of based off the format of the song, “I kissed a girl” by Katy Perry. Anyone else notice that?

  11. I’ve seen the zombie walk for the past few years and I got to say it gets bigger and better every year! I love how everyone’s in character while they walk! xD

  12. werewolfs vampires and zombies OH MY lol…. i love zombies and vampires and throw werewolfs in there too šŸ™‚ i read this book about how when some people die they become zombies but still are the same as humans but paler walkss sorta slow but still normal and this one girl fell in love w/ a zombie but later on discovers she loves her bestfriend who gets turned into a zombie after being shot … theres a lot of drama in this book romance hatred revenge … šŸ˜€

  13. I’ve never really given much thought to zombies, vampires and werewolves seem to be the fashionable creatures of the day! I do remember seeing zombies on the wizards of waverly place where they had that zombie prom. That was pretty cool, is the zombie walk like that? šŸ˜›

  14. Fantastic! I’ve been thinking of organising a zombie walk in my sleepy little seaside town.
Librarian + horror geek = awesome.
For Halloween this year I was thinking of putting on a special event along the lines of Zombies versus Vampires–plenty of stuff for every fan of fiends.

  15. i agree with you since i am also a fan of vampires too, but zombies are awesome as well and they should make more book and movies of zombies in the future

  16. After the Vampire and Werewolf phenomenon, zombies are a relief! I should take a look at some of those books…

  17. Vampires are great, but they are becoming cliche. Zombies are a good new twist, but they definitely should make more zombie movies and books.

  18. You will love the books by Stephen King. They are all horror-ish but not in the vampires and zombies way

  19. I noticed that as well! I was hoping that he didn’t use that though… I like original authors.

  20. In my opinion I LOVE vampires! And after vampires…its the werewolves. But I agree, zombies are cool! Zombies may not be my favorite but they are a good twist. But no matter how old the vampire and werewolve thing goes..I will ALWAYS and CONTINUE to love them.

  21. Zombies are cool. I understand that people are mostly into vampires at the moment, but great time will come for zombies as well.

  22. I enjoy horror movies too. But the aftermath of watching them annoys me! Like getting scared of the smallest thing, nightmares etc. I still love watching them though. šŸ™‚

  23. Zombies are where horror’s at.
They don’t need to be conventionally attractive in order to maul you down.
As well, zombies dispose of an entire body as opposed to wasting a corpse. I mean, all that meat gome to waste for just some blood? Vampires should learn to widen their diet options.

  24. true šŸ™‚ vampires seem the most mysterious and alluring lol well zombies just don’t have the same affect on me thier slow unlike a vampire who can come quick to ur rescue šŸ™‚ lmao but i love all mythical creatures

  25. i read this book called the kiss of life its about a girl who lives in a world were zombies are sorta well part of everyday life ( except thy cant go to school and have no rights -_- ) its all about how the zombies want equality

  26. Hmm…I’m not really into Zombies and all the other supernatural creatures. I would have nightmares if i read a book about them…But different people have different tastes, so oh well.

  27. Zombies vs vampires? Hmm…that’s a tough choice 😐 So far with all the twilight hype ive just been hearing about vampires and werewolves..zombies would be an interesting change XD

  28. I definitely like vampires more than zombies…but I guess zombies are taking over…^^ I’ll try some of these zombie books.

  29. I like zombie novels… but I certainly like zombie mangas more!
Please try “High School Of the Dead”, better yet, the anime of it came out this summer! So now, (unlike me)you CHOOSE to either watch the anime or read the manga!

  30. Zombie vs. Vampires.. I’m smelling an epic movie.
Zombies are a great intro into the horror genre. I used to be so scared of it, but then I started watching Zombie movies, and reading Zombies books and now I’m loving them all.
Zombies are a classic comedic take on the whole genre. Shaun of the Dead? Marvel Zombies? Pride& Prejudice and Zombie. Even the classic Evil Dead franchises. Even the thriller video- Zombies dancing.. AWESOME. I was so scared of Vincent Price’s laugh at the end.
You can’t really do that with vampire, although the first Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is a teen classic in my opinion and is very funny.
However, here are the program Dates:
    Kennedy/Eglington: October 9,
    Decomp on a Dime
Malvern Branch (Neilson and Sheppard) Oct 16 @ 2 pm
Lilian Smith Branch (College & Spadina) Oct 30 @ 2 pm
    Zombie School
    Bloor/Gladstone Branch – Oct 27 @ 6 pm
    Your fiend in severed arms,
    Adele

  31. Hmm… I think I prefer Vampires, but I have nothing against Zombies. I guess I like Vampires better because though they are “dead”, they’re not rotting.

  32. Originally, I was a fan of the “Twilight” series. But due to its immense success, there are now too many vampire books on the shelves which I find terribly cliche. I think I’ll start reading zombie books now šŸ™‚

  33. Never been to the zombie walk
and i agree there are too many books on vampires and werewolves they should start making more zombie ones.
and i LOVE Steven King for the fact that his horror is not focused on vamps, weres or zombies.
