Cooking For Teens
Hi Hungry Teens!
Do you ever find that your paren'ts never make what you want to eat?
How many times have you said, "We're having rice and chicken again?"
Well, how about making it yourself?
I'm Tara, a Senior Library Assistant at the Toronto Public Library by day but by night, I'm the mother of one teen and one pre-teen. I love to cook but our hectic schedule doesn't give me much time to make a variety of meals.
This summer we are embarking on the adventure of becoming less dependent on mommy and learning to make the meals we like to share with our friends and family. There's no time like the present because sooner or later we all have to go it on our own. Who wants to be eating mac & cheese all through college?
We're going to try a variety of recipes found in the books on the Cooking For Teens booklist. We'll share our successes and disasters with you and we hope that you will try them and let us know how you did.
Would you prefer to eat the unhealthy, fast food or a healthy meal prepared just the way you like it?
Tell me what you think.

To be honest, I prefer to eat unhealthy, fast food, even though I know eating a healthy prepared meal is a better option. I know want to learn how to make a quick and easy meal that is nutritious but yet delicious.
I have to agree that the appeal of fast food is hard to ignore. It’s great that you now want to learn how to do it yourself, at least it will give you the choice.
I love healthy cooking and baking…especially when I get to experiment with different ingredients!
It’s exciting when you get a new recipe and you can’t wait to try it!
I don’t like cooking all that much. In all honesty i’d rather just make a fruit salad (little to no effort) rather than cooking and preparing a full meal. I know it doesn’t make very much sense but that’s just me. Cookbooks nearly put me to sleep..
I prefer to eat healthy the way I just like it, but occasionally i have the urge to eat unhealthy. I mean you gotta say that sometimes that junk food is just so convenient to pick up and eat, or you could just put it in a bag and bring it along somewhere.
Junk food is really convenient and occasionally we do have to grab’n’go but it’s not something we’d want to be doing regularly since that could put a sizable dent in the budget.
I know many people who don’t like cooking, you’re not alone. There are quite a few meals that you could just throw together as easily as a fruit salad. A lot of people do that, especially in the summer.
Personally, I have never attempted to make anything in the kitchen, other than fried eggs and sandwiches. However, I prefer eating healthy foods. Sometimes the ingredients used in fast foods are unknown. By eating something healthy that is prepared at home,I know exactly what ingredients is used.
I love cooking. I would make my own food when I feel like it, but for the most part, I’m just lazy. It’s just food all the way for me (I know, it’s a guilty pleasure T___T).
I would prefer eating a homemade and healthy meal rather than fast food. However at times when I’m outside, I stop by the nearest fast food restaurant, especially McDonald’s. Now, I am trying to avoid eating unhealthy. This summer, I am planning on trying out different recipes and learn how to cook several new dishes.
Cooking is where I feel most at home. If I have the time and the ingredients at hand, I would totally cook healthy food. However, I’m a lazy person, so I usually just whip something up from whatever is in the fridge. Usually it’s healthy, but every now and then I just stuff some pizza or chicken nuggets in the oven. But honestly, I really like fast food. So this summer, I actually have some time to cook and bake. I’ll try to keep things healthy, but nobody wants to eat a spinach cupcake…
