Foods to Bring to Mars
Ever wonder what it would be like to eat in
space? Well, did you know the first human to eat food in space was Russian
astronaut Gherman Titov at aged 25, in 1961? Since then space foods for astronauts
have developed and changed. Favourite space foods now include M & Ms,
Jello, and shrimp cocktail.
Imagine you have been selected by the Word
Out Committee to go on a two-way trip to Mars for a summer vacation. Your only
mission is to survive. It’s a bonus if you can go on some adventures and report
on your Mars World Record. You are excited. There are lots to do on Mars. But when
your stomach grumbles, you know you are hungry. As you look into space, all you
see are stars twinkling. You know you’re very far away from Earth. You think
about the many food options in Toronto. You think about your family and
homemade cooked meals. You wish you didn’t take your Mom’s repetitive chicken
dish for granted.
Want to avoid hunger in space? Let’s think
what delicious dishes or cuisines you would like to take with you and why? Don’t tell me Mars bars…..

What about a Milky Way or Galaxy bar? 😀
I would probably take some sort of sandwich or sub with me, if it’s wrapped up it can be very portable
I would take chicken quesadilla. They are my favourite. Pizza might work too it can be made with a whole bunch of stuff. As long as it something that would float away.
oops, I meant as long as it is something that would not float away! lol
i agree with JessicaKMW i would take something that’s wrapped and easy to eat and prepare like a sandwich
I would take some of those prepackaged astronaut foods. Apparen’tly they have dehydrated strawberries and ice cream! Aside from that, I would probably take pizza or fries. They’re easy to eat, and certainly delicious.
good point!! there’s no gravity in space so food cannot fall onto the floor. Your chicken quesadilla and pizza will float around if you don’t hold on to it. But are you going to eat only pizza and chicken quesadilla for the entire summer vacation on space?
pizzas and fries sound good. Will you get bored of these food though? Remember you will be gone for the entire summer. what else will you bring?
yes sandwiches are very quick to make. But I hate soggy sandwiches. I’d prefer fresh sandwiches. I think it would be fun to make sandwiches in space, don’t you?
Easy to eat and prepare? good thinking. Would you try cooking in space? What else would you bring that would last for the entire trip?
Yeah, but with the whole zero-gravity thing I think it would be pretty hard to put any condiments on, considering they would just float awy in strands. I wouldn’t want to have to chase after ketchup strands in space
Marshmallows. Marshmallows everywhere…
Wow…if I have to survive through the whole summer, I need a lot of varieties or I’ll be too cranky to do much but sulk around. Can’t I just bring a whole buffet? I would also settle for a personal chef with a portable and fully stocked kitchen. Gordon Ramsay would do..
Haha those two foods, I could never get bored of. I also want to bring sushi, but that needs to be prepared fresh, which would be quite a hassle. Jello and shrimp cocktail sound really good too. I also really enjoy rice pudding for dessert. Unfortunately I can’t bring many of my favorite foods because they’d cause a mess in space! I enjoy poutine and fried noodles, but both of them have quite a bit of sauce in them, which would probably float around in zero gravity.
I’d bring granola bars, nuts, cans of tuna, juice boxes (with the little straws), vegetables, tortillas and chocolate!
I would bring something that’s dry or lasts long like dried corns or wheat products, but for drink, instant coffee/tea might be a good choice but the zero gravity might be a problem!
it would be funny to play tag with your food.
I like that idea. I imagine you can just float on your back and swallow them.
A personal chef and stocked kitchen would solve a lot of food issues in space.
Those are healthy choices!! You still want to eat well in space.
You’re concerned with pollution in space– very environmentally conscious!! But I think you can start a recycling club or teach others about food composting.
I would bring a lot of citrus fruit (because I’m not sure if you can get scurvy up there, but just in case). I would bring cucumbers and dehydrated fruit. Whip cream, cheese strings, chocolate chips, cookies, tuna (in cans) and a lot of water with like fruit to put in it to sweeten it, if I got sick of water. Also, I would find a way to pack to pack some ribs or some kind of meat, because I need meat!
