Playing with the Medium

I grew up… a little while ago… with vinyl records in the house. The first music I ever bought was a flat, round, 12" disc with a paper label and small hole in the middle, surrounded by a wide swath of black made shimmery by the tiny grooves etched into it. A record.

Like Ray, I love them, though more for content than rarity. (Those who are true collectors, though? Will love this little window on their hobby.) Still, there are those particular records that are fascinating and capture your attention. Coloured vinyl, for example, always seemed very cool. Picture discs, even more so. I have one album that is lasercut so that it reflects light prismatically in triangular shapes when you tilt it just the right way. But have you ever seen vinyl that wasn't round? Me neither, but check this out:

Or, you can make vinyl look totally different on purpose. We're talking using it not as a medium for music, but as a craft medium. meaning that if a record gets scratched, you can use it for something after all, capturing the cool, retro feel of vinyl in a totally different object. Check out a few I found:

Vinyl love - clock craft

I'm loving this clock – so simple, doesn't wreck the actual album, but looks great. This picture is the product from this how-to.

Vinyl love - cake stand craft

For the domestic type who might actually make desserty-type things to serve, this cake plate would be right up my alley. If I were that type, which doesn't happen often.Wnat to make one? Here's the tutorial on that, also the source of the image.

Vinyl love - bowl craft

This is the one I am dying to make, myself – a vinyl bowl! The perfect use for the scratched wax in my stacks, since you won't be able to tell at all. And you can store anything in it! Love this, and the instructions here (also the image source) make it sound totally possible. YES!

Anybody got some cool vinyl love to share with Ray and I?
