  1. I just finished reading firefly lane, by Kristen Hannah. less than 24 hours after I started. Although it’s been out for a while and the description on the cover bored me (it was annoyingly and purposely vague, don’t you hate when people do that), the story made me both laugh and cry. Hard. firefly lane is a novel about two friends who grow up and live their seperate lives together. In other words, there is no grand story arc; the book is simply a recollection of life. Please, please, please – just read it, even if you think you won’t enjoy it. It’s wonderfully written, has a sequel that I must read, and only has 5 holds on the 38 library copies.

  3. Currently, I’m reading ‘Before I Go To Sleep’ by S.J. Watson, and I CAN’T PUT IT DOWN. It constantly keeps me on my toes, and I am genuinely frightened for Christine and what will happen to her.
Also, not long ago, I started listening to Coldplay and I am absolutely in LOVE with them. Their lyrics are just so meaningful, and I can listen to them on repeat for hours on end. My personal favorites include ‘Yes’, ‘The Scientist’ (which every time I sit down to play piano, my fingers automatically play), ‘Violet Hill’, ‘Swallowed by the Sea’, and ‘White Shadows’.
Also, I ADORE John Green (on YouTube, Tumblr, and in writing). He’s just SO funny, and seem to be able to relate to him very much. That said, I loooooove VlogBrothers and I can listen to Hank/John ramble on about ANYthing for hooourss

  6. Just read “Snitch” by Allison Van Diepen!!! Awesome book, it really hooks you up especially with its catchy phrases like “one label can brand you for life” or “In a school run by gangs, staying out was harder than joining. We knew who our friends were, and were careful what we said. If people thought we were haters, it would only be a matter of time… “.Allison V. Diepen is an incredible writer and she can really connect to many teens through her books like “Snitch” and “Vampire Stalker”. Can’t wait to read next book “Street Pharm”!

  7. If you have never read “Gone” by Michael Grant yet, I highly recommend it. With music, I cannot stop listening to The Script. I listen to their songs, “Breakeven” and “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved”. While with movies, “Pitch Perfect” is cool, watch out for the Cups scene.

  10. I absolutely adore The Girl of Fire and Thorns Trilogy by Rae Carson. The heroine Elisa is a kick-butt, smart, heroine and her story gets better as you grow with her and she encounters new adventures, finds true love, conquers her foes and goes to war. It’s a series filled with magic and wonder.
and The Girl With Borrowed Wings by Rinsai Rosetti, it was so sweet and romantic and full of adventure and hidden magic. The world that Rinsai Rosetti created was literally soemthing out of a dream and it was beautifully written.

  11. I just love the book “A Dog’s Life: The Autobiography of a Stray”, which is children’s novel written in 2005 by Ann M. Martin. It talks about how Squirrel, the dog, wanders around the world after the disappearance of her mother and brother. Throughout the breathtaking book, the author has grant us the opportunity to discover a whole new dimension of a dog’s perspective to our world. The world that seems sympathetic and welcoming, but can also be a treacherous place, to a stray dog. The whole story is just a flashback of when Squirrel had finally found her perfect owner. Unfortunately, many years have quickly passed by, and she became an old dog. It’s a book filled with wonder, joy and laughter, but also packed with melancholy and sorrow. I really recommend this book to anyone out there, no matter how old you are, this book will fascinate you as much as it did to me.

Perhaps my favorite book series would be “percy jackson and the olympians” and the series after that: “the heroes of olympus”. Both series involve the main character, Percy Jackson, the son of Poseidon, and his friends. These action-packed books tells us the hardships that Percy faces as a half-blood, with unique disorders from other regular high school students. He must battle bloody monsters and train hard in Camp Half-Blood to try to make peace on Earth once and for all. If you’re interested in Greek and Roman mythology, then I strongly suggest that you take some time to look into them if you haven’t already.

  15. I finally got my hands on a copy of ‘The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared’ by Jonas Jonasson, who is a Swedish author. The book is just amazing. It’s a very light read and it’s very funny and witty, and extremely well written. It switches from the present day to the main character’s (Allan Karlsson) exciting life traveling with the recipe to atomic bombs as a young man. I don’t want to write too much about it and give away the story, so I’m just gonna say that it was very much worth the $10 and it’ll be one of my favourites for a long time.
Another great book is ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain’ by Garth Stein.

  17. OMIGOSH! No way! Some people in my class has been obsessed with The Fray! It has always been the song “How to Save a Life” that is played. We would just randomly start singing out of nowhere. Someone would start quietly humming it or playing it on their phone, then others would start singing along. It would become something like a flash mob…Our teacher gave up on trying to stop us.

I remember when I first heard Dog Days are Over on the radio after it came out and wondering how on earth I could have ever listened to the pop I listened to before (not that all pop songs are bad) when there was a godess of music right in front of me. I also like Calvin Harris.

It’s like a romance novel I guess but it is so new and so relatable. The focus is on their journey and not their love life. You will find yourself shipping Augustus and Hazel in no time. Wouldn’t it be cool if we had a costume contest? I mean like the contestants could dress up as their favourite character, and post a picture of both them in costume as well as a picture/description of their character. People could choose to blur/not blur their faces and the prize could be something like a set of books or something like that…or a kobo ereader! What do you guys think?

  35. I recently read a book called The Good Earth and wrote a review on it because I recommend it to everyone. 🙂
The Good Earth is a powerful story which emphasizes the significance of one’s moral piety, and the rise and fall of human fortune/life. Pearl S. Buck focuses on the themes of life cycle, religion, wealth as a destroyer of traditional values and the oppression of women in Chinese culture during the 1800′s.
The story takes place in China during the opium wars, mainly among rural land where the main protagonist, Wang Lung, begins his odyssey as a humble, meager farmer. He is deeply, spiritually connected to the earth but is gradually consumed by his burning desire for status and wealth.
Pearl S. Buck invites the reader to view the world from the perspective of Wang Lung, a young agriculturalist who experiences parallel tastes of famine and fortune among the broad spectrum of human success.
The story begins in Wang Lung’s humble abode, on the farm where he reaches marriageable age and is paired with his obedient, docile wife, O-Ian. Together they cultivate an abundant, profitable harvest from their land and start a family. All is well, until a horrible famine settles among the land, forcing the family to move to a southern city for the winter and strangle their new born daughter, being unable to feed her. Wang Lung struggles to keep his family alive and even considers selling one of his daughters as a slave for money. Eventually, desperation and rage cause him to ransack a rich mans home, revealing new wealth for his family. Wang Lung hires laborers to tend his land and becomes a rich. A flood forces him to be idle, causing him to become bored. His boredom opens a window of perspective, as he begins to notice his wife’s appearance. He begins emotionally abusing his wife for having unbound feet and seeks pleasure with a delicate prostitute named Lotus. O-Ian falls terminally ill and immediately, Wang Lung regrets his cruel, malicious treatment towards her. Wang Lung’s sons refuse to work as farmers, for they don’t share the same devotion and faith to the land. Furthermore, his sons perpetually argue over money and their wives develop an intense animosity toward one another. In the end, Wang Lung grows old and is surrounded by grandchildren, but sadly is also surrounded by petty family disagreements. Wang Lung’s sons decide to sell the family land and divide the money among themselves, splitting with the land that gave them wealth.
Buck takes a very neutral, realistic approach throughout the story and lets one of the main characters, O-Ian, express her anguish and suffering through other means of speech. For example how she never complains when Wang Lung insults her feet, but immediately begins binding her daughters feet when they are born, warning them not to complain for it would anger Wang Lung.
The book being from the perspective of Wang Lung, a very simple minded man, significantly improves the quality of reading between the lines and developing one’s unique insight. The reader can understand Wang Lung’s perspective on life, but furthermore see his foolish faults. For example, when he takes his wife’s hard work and sacrifices for granted as she falls terminally ill.
There is no mistaking the subtle yet powerful impression this book will leave on the reader, as they witness the rise and fall of a man’s life, the change he develops throughout the novel depending on his financial situation and lastly the bittersweet ending left on the readers tongue as Wang Lung’s sons sell the land for money.

  36. I recommend The Immortal instruments series by Cassandra Clare~ This series is fairly popular as it is but if you haven’t heard of it you should go check it out. The first book in the series is called City of bones and the movie for the first book is actually coming out this August! 😀 I also recommend The Infernal Devices series which is also by Cassandra Clare. This book series is very similar to The Immortal Series because it follows the same type of storyline but it’s set in a different location with different characters. The first book in that series is called Clockwork Prince 🙂 Oh if you do decide to check out these two book series, make sure to read The Immortal Instruments series first because you might have a hard time understanding the storyline if you start with The Infernal Devices~

  43. Tarnish is a definitely something to read over the summer. Set in the Elizabethan era, the reader is introduced to a variety of interesting characters, with very big personalities. The protagonist can be considered a rebel, as she denies following her father’s ‘orders/favours to maintain a good reputation’ and thereby, follows her own heart, which leads her to her own success.

  45. I just finished reading Openly Straight by Bill Konigsberg a MUST READ novel about Rafe Goldberg aka “the gay kid” in his hometown. Rafe decides to take on new identity when he goes away to a fancy Massachusetts school. As you well imagine, problems arise – both tragic and hilarious.
Interspersed in the novel is Rafe’s English writing assignment. These personal narratives were some of the best parts of the book.

  46. Anthony Horowitz. The Power of Five series. I just finished the series this summer. He is such an awesome writer!!!!! His books are REALLY, REALLY , REALLY exciting and fantastic!!! I get lost in his books so quickly and I really want to meet him! The last book is called “Oblivion”. It is about 5 gatekeepers that have special powers. Matt- has the power to predict the future, move things and more.
Scott and Jamie – have the power to read minds. Scarlett – has the power to control the weather. Pedro – has the power to heal. They have to work together to fight the Old Ones. The Trouble is, they are scattered all over the world and most of the world is not on their side. One example is Diego Salamanda. He controlled most of Mexico and since the Old Ones offered him something, he tried to kill Matt and even the police were on Diego’s side. All the Old Ones want to do is bring destruction to the world, killing everything in it’s path. It has already begun to do so. Will the Gatekeepers reunite and stop the forces of evil before the Old Ones take over the World? The world is a hostile and dangerous world but there is still some hope. The Power Of Five. A must read. 🙂
Could we have a contest to win Anthony Horowitz books?? Thank you.
