Bugs, Spiders, and Other Bead Creations

Beading is another interesting way to create something completely different using beads, wires, sea shells, and an assortment of other found objects.  While many of the beading books found in the library may relate primarily to making necklaces and earrings, here’s one that takes beading to a slightly different  level.

The beading book that recently found its way onto my desk is called Bead Bugs: Cute, Creepy and Quirky Bead Bugs coverProjects to Make with Beads, Wires, and Fun Found Objects by Amy Kopperude. This book contains an excellent collection of 23 different beading projects, many of which are shaped like the bugs you can find in the garden during the summer.  Care to make your own Spider Suncatcher out of two flat marbles, some wire, and paint markers? How about a Hermit Crab Cage Companion out of wire, a seashell, some oval beads and flat beads, and an alligator clip? Other fun projects include glow-in-the-dark Fireflies in a Jar, a Bug – Eye Fishing Jig, a Stick Insect Hat Pin, and even a Bookworm Bookmark. The instructions for all of the projects are very clearly laid out on each page, and the author has provided a useful list of all of the tools and materials that you will need at the beginning of the book.

This is an excellent book for anyone thinking of doing something unusual with beading crafts, and offers some great ideas for what can be done with any extra beads and wire you might have stored for a rainy day of crafting.

So, what do you think? What would you make out of some beads and wire?

  1. As soon as the word “bug” came up it freaked me out. I do not like bugs…I admit I am a city kid. I know it’s crafts…but bugs freak me out. I can’t even touch books with spiders on them….Yuck. A friend of mine used to be the same way when it came to books about snakes…couldn’t touch them..lol

  2. I don’t really like bugs much either. I mean I wouldn’t freak and run if an ant or small spider is on the floor, but I would not want a huge bug in my room just sitting there. Even if it is made of beads.

  3. I tried beading before, attempting to make a dragonfly. From then on I just stick to paper crafts like tissue paper flowers. But it would be cool to come back and give beading another chance.
