City Of Bones Contest for Word Out!

August 12, 2013 | Sophia | Comments (60)

City of Bones Book CoverWin the movie tie-in edition of Cassandra Clare's City of Bones, The
Shadowhunter’s Guide, and The Official Illustrated Movie Companion, courtesy of Simon & Schuster.

Geniffer, a volunteer with the Steeles Youth Advisory Group, has devised a great contest for all of you Mortal Instruments fans.  Please read on for the contest details.

In City of Bones, all imaginable characters are brought to life. “Don't stop there. I suppose there are also, what, vampires and werewolves and zombies?"

"Of course there are. Although you mostly find zombies farther south, where the voudun priests are."

"What about mummies? Do they only hang around Egypt?"

"Don't be ridiculous. No one believes in mummies.”

Shadowhunters were created with the mixture of human and the angel Raziel’s blood to make a race of Nephilim created to protect humans from demons.  Demons are the parasites that wreak havoc in the world and can'take up various shapes and forms.  And Downworlders are the cross-breed between humans and demons known as the werewolves, vampires, werewolves and faeries.

As Cassandra Clare has bestowed us with the creative story filled with these ingenious and imaginative characters, you too will get the chance to create your own Shadowhunter, Demon, or Downworlder.

The objective or goal of this contest is to create and represent a NEW character for this series either as a Shadowhunter, Downworlder or Demon. The characters can be: Shadowhunters, werewolves, faeries, vampires, warlocks or even demons. However, they can not be existing characters from the book.

Characters can be represented in a poem or a ( very) short story.  Please include the character's name.  Simply post your poem or story in the comments.

The only rules we’ve got are:

You have to be a resident of Toronto to qualify as a winner.

Provide us with a valid email address when you submit your entry
(don’t worry; it’ll be kept confidential – see below for more details).

You have to submit your entry by 11:59 PM on Sunday, August 18, 2013 in order to
qualify to win the prize!

Once all the entries are in, we’re going to be choosing our favourite, and the winner is going to get the City of Bones book bundle.

Personal information on this form is collected under the authority of the
Public Libraries Act, s.20 (a) and (d) and will be used to administer the
Library's Word Out contest. Questions about the collection or management of
personal information should be directed to Thomas Krzyzanowski Service

  1. It sounds great, by the way, are we allowed to put a link to the story, rather than just put the story/poem right here? Like, I have an account on a reading and writing site, Wattpad and I probably will post my entry there when I’m done, so yeah.
    Thank you.

  2. Oh, and also, sorry if I’m asking too many questions but since there’s no rule regarding the maximum number of entries, are we allowed to create more than one character (and/or short story/poem)?
Thank you. Sorry if I’m being a bother.

  3. MN, no need to apologize for all the questions. They are all valid and fantastic. You can leave us a link to your character no problem and you can also create more than one. The judges are looking forward to reading your entries.

  4. When we write a poem or a (very) short story for our character(s), are we allowed to include the book’s original characters if they have a purposeful role in our short story?
Additionally, is 300 words an okay word count for a (very) short story?

  5. What if you make a totally new creature that is not a werewolf, faerie or a vampire? Can you do that? But the new creature is still half demon.

  6. “Setekh”
We are trained from the very beginning
    To kill,
    The Demons and the downworlders
    That break the law.
    We are very powerful
Made from angel and human blood.
    We fight
    We conquer
    We are the Shadowhunters.
    No one can stop us
    No one but
    Setekh
    Where he comes from,
    Nobody knows.
    We cannot stop him
    We cannot fight him
He is one of the Downworlders
But no one knows what he is,
Not a werewolf, not a vampire, not a faerie
    He is a new creature.
The clave is getting out of control
Humans, animals and nature are being destroyed!
One by one the damaged trees fall down.
We are here to protect the humans,
    That certainly isn’t happening.
Because fighting with Setekh is hopeless.
    No one tries,
    No one wins.
    Setekh
    is the conqueror.
    Always.
The world is now full of
    Chaos
    Destruction
    Grief
    All because of
    Setekh

  7. “Of the Night”
    – – – – – – – –
    Intelligent eyes
    Black as coal,
    Scour the dark
    And pierce your soul.
    Finds his target,
    Leaps with grace
    And kills the demon
    Without a trace.
    Skin indiscernible
    From the black night below
    Stealthy and silent;
    A twin to his shadow.
    In vain try to stop
    This boy Nephilim
    Too quick for mere humans
    To catch wind of him.
    Paragon of his kind
    My honor to indite.
    Indomitable spirit
    Creature of the night.

  8. I walk through the graveyard
Following he who does not speak.
    but speaks to your mind.
Synyster Gates has and eerie way about him
    Somehow he consumes
    the warmth.
    the life.
and sounds out of everything around him.
Not even his footsteps among the crunchy leafs,
    leaves no sound.
The silent brother leads me to the one place
    he controls
Where the demons screams the silent scream
Which sends both horror and pity through my very being.
Then a secret door opens that was once forgotten,
into a dark and damp corridor
    where I will descend
    through the city of bones.

  9. I need to know, I thought, taking a step into my home, with Jace right behind me. Suddenly, time seems to stop, and everything freezes. Except for the figure in front of me. A young girl with ribbon-like hair stood in front of me, her emerald eyes flashing.
“Are you stupid, Clary?!” she whispers fiercely, giving me a hard shove.
“Um,” Demon? No. Shadowhunter? No. “Are you a…downworlder?”
She shook her head, “In actuality, I’m dead. I am Autumn. Status: Dead.”
Great. First supernatural things start happening, and now a dead girl was following me.
“Aannnnnd,” she says, hopping onto my shoulder, “You’re stuck with me now, Clary!!!”
“Wait, why me? Isn’t there someone else you can haunt?”
“I’M NOT A GHOST!” Autumn leaps off my shoulder and twirls around in midair, obviously angry, “I am a being-who-was-murdered-by-a-Greater-Demon-but-has-a-debt-I-want-to-repay-and-when-he-or-she’s-will-is-strong-enough-they-are-permitted-to-come-back-and-”
“Ow…” I felt a headache brewing, “Autumn, two words. Say it in two words.”
“Well, okay but it’s not fun that way,” time unfreezes and a large troll appears, “I’m your CRUSTOS SUSCÉPTOR! Hi forsaken creature, let’s have a welcome party for me!!!”
I winced as the troll swiped at Autumn with a claw, but she dodged at the last moment, her ribbons flying everywhere. That’s how I met Autumn, my Crustos Suscéptor; whom was annoyingly cheerful and claustrophobic, and followed me around. Forever?
Autumn nods enthusiastically, “Uh huh. Well, that is, until you find eternal happiness, whenever that is. Or until I repay my debt. Then you’re on your own. Unless if you want me to stay, that is?”
I stared at the damage her ribbons had caused, and realized Autumn was recklessly destructive,”I guess you could stay, since you fit in with this story pretty well.” As if on cue, the troll lunges for me, and ribbons fly, leaving a hole in the southern wall.

The living room was simple; just a staircase, a couch, some chairs, and a table. There were two worried figures talking. “Clary, you can’t do this!” Simon said “do you know how powerful he is?” “Someone has to stop him!” Clary sighed. “To be honest, I don’t want to be all heroic and save the world from this monster. But if I don’t, who will?” Simon frowned and sat down on a chair. The chair was made out of one of the rarest woods, probably East Indian Rosewood. “Setekh is an unidentified creature! Do you have any idea of who you’re dealing with?”
Then, there was a creak. Clary looked around suspiciously. “What was that noise?” she asked. “What noise?” Simon whispered. There was another creak. Louder this time. “That noise.” Clary said quietly. “Wait, I think someone is here.” Clary walked toward where the sound had came from. “Come out!” she shouted. “You will be found soon anyways.” Slowly a figure stepped out from behind the staircase. It stared sheepishly at Clary. “State your business!” Clary demanded. Meanwhile, Simon was staring in shock at the creature. It looked repulsive and slimy. He still couldn’t believe it. “I was only doing it because my boss said to, okay?” the creature scowled.
Clary sighed. “Why are you here?” “I was here to spy on you. You know, to figure out what you were planning.” The creature frowned. “Obviously that didn’t happen.” “Setekh…” Simon muttered. “Come on Clary. We have to go! He knows where we are.” “Hey! Wait a minute! You can’t go!” the creature snarled. “We already have,” Simon said dryly producing a dart from his pocket. He threw it at the creature. The surprised creature crumpled. Clary and Simon darted out the door. They mysteriously disappeared into the clearing.

  11. The boy and girl huddled by the buffet table, feeling oddly out of place. The girl’s gaze darted across the room in search of the warlock who would aid them. She had no information to work with, except for a title: Sariel
When badgering the head of the institute for further info, she’d been presented with a solitary word: Blue
Her train of thought was disrupted as she was bumped by a passerby. A word of apology escaped her lips, and then all she could was stare.
His skin was the color of the finest cream and impeccably smooth, free of any distorted blemishes or freckles. His features were softly delicate; eyes slightly too large for his face. His lashes were dark and unnaturally long; curtaining eyes that were a bold shade-the color arguably either blue or violet. His hair was blue, but an entirely subdued shade, gentle on one’s eyes, and pleasing to the mind. On his temple was a strange symbol of sorts; small in proximity but impossible to miss-the navy blue print merely enunciating the pallor of skin, and hair. The design itself was constructed of sweeping, but steady lines, and the faintest flair where it all connected. He was almost too pretty to be a guy, and his lack of height and slim build merely furthered that. He walked with natural grace, but that was not unusual, for nearly all the occupants in the room walked with an elegant twinge to their steps.
His movements were so effortlessly flowing and sinuous that it was almost as if he were dancing.
He was different, this meek porcelain boy-with hair softer than the finest silk, and eyes that took in all light; as brilliant and radiant as a twin set of stars; laughable in their aptness.
Who was he? Was he Sariel?
The boy knocked her elbow and nodded at the passing male. “Blue” he whispered.
    They had their answer.

  12. Who am I?
    I am the night.
    I feed off the innocent,
    and bathe in their blood.
    Werewolves and humans alike,
Nothing saves them from my grueling bite
Now I hide from the living,
and shun what I have become.
Time does not touch my skin.
    Death fears my glance.
    Life withers in my grip.
Yet I hide amongst the past.
I rose to fulfill my name
as the first of us all.
Raphael Santiago and Alexei de Quincey,
    Both my kin,
    Our cloaks drenched crimson.
    Rise up from your graves
    and answer to my call.
The downworlders shall no longer hide.
Once again we shall be the night.
Among the living we shall feast,
    and all will fear
    the vampire’s bite.
    I am Cameron.

    I watch from afar,
    Waiting
Patience is the sole lesson I have learned
    From my ex-master
    Waiting.
    Watching
    You.
    So young,
    So innocent-or not
    Hands, already stained permanently
    With blood of my
    Brothers and Sisters:
    Demons. But who said
    You could shed our blood?!
-I will not lose my temper
    Here.
    But I will
    Wait and watch you
    And when time is
    Right,
    You shall see
Me rise from the shadows of
    The pages and
    Appear, still wet with ink
    One word
    “Willow”: my name
And the goblet will be snatched from
    Your dripping red hands
    And
    No more blood of mine
    Shall be shed.
    No more
    No more
    No.
    More.
But for now, I shall be
    Patient, a skill I
    Mastered from
    Valentine.

  15. “Please try to shut up Victoria. If you keep up with the roll of complaints we’re going to be a Miltok demon’s midnight snack.”
Lillian Nightraven lowered her crossbow and surveyed the forest wall, pointedly ignoring Victoria Herondale’s pouting. An hour into the hunt and Tori was already complaining about how she was cold, hungry , and didn’t want her gear to dissolve from demon ichor. Lillian was positively drained. She had already gone to the extreme trouble of sneaking the two of them out of the Institute and breaking open the weapons room that night, and she would not be disappointing Tori on her first hunt. Tori was not even old enough to receive her first Marks but already a master at everything that could be learned from books. She wanted to experience killing a demon ‘first hand’ but was too young to go out with her paren’ts to hunt or patrol. So they had resorted to sneaking out in pursuit of a demon.
The forest stretched far in either direction and was densely packed with fir and spruce trees, the perfect spot for a Miltok demon to hide. Lillian took out her crossbow and gestured to Tori, who unravelled her gleaming silver whip from her wrist. The pair walked into the forest, leaves crunching under their boots as they moved along.
People who knew them noticed how inseparable the pair was. They suspected it was because of their family connections—not because they were both categorized as oddities; Lillian with her faerie blood and Tori with her scorching gold eyes. Lillian would shield Tori from others when they did little things to exclude them; a stopped conversation when they entered a room, or giving them disgusted looks when they thought the two weren’t looking.
“Li,” Tori whispered from behind Lillian. “It smells awfully demonic here.”
Lillian suppressed a smile and stopped walking, turning to face Tori. “That’s because we’re entering Miltok territory…” She faltered and stopped talking—Victoria was no longer behind her. A shrill scream pierced the air.
It was going to be a very long night.

  17. MN you are not a bother at all. The reason I was unable to see the timestamp was because it is not listed on your specific story but rather on your whole collection. It will be upto the judges to make the final call but I thank you and your friend for giving us a screen shot. Best of luck
