Manga Mania

Nightschool_2Since Svetlana Chmakova is having
her seminar today at the Albion Branch, I thought it would be a good day to
discuss Manga and Anime.  Now, I have to
admit that my repertiore isn’t very extensive when it comes to this genre, but
I had a great bunch of youth at the Albion branch with whom I started a Manga
club. I absolutely loved their passion and enthusiasm for all things Manga…
it was contagious!

My question for you is, in your
opinion, how do the two formats compare?

I found that visually, I was
satisfied with the characters because I already knew what they looked like, so
there was no room for disappointment (ever picture a character a certain way in
your head, and then when they are brought to life on screen, you feel that
someone else would have been better suited for that role?). There is also so
much more that can be done when something is animated, so it is really easy to
follow a storyline without leaving out certain details. I also like that there is no time
constraint, as each series consists of numerous episodes, so you can get the
full story (instead of cramming everything into two and a half hours).

Also, for those of you that enjoy
Manga and Anime, do you like the continuity of a series? With movies and books,
I sometimes dread the time in between part one and two (or three and four, etc.),
as I am itching to continue with it, but with Anime, I found the time interval
shorter, so more bearable. How about you?

  1. I love both, although I enjoy manga more ’cause it’s faster to go through each book/chapter, which usually results in a longer wait. Anime is awesome too, but when the voices don’t fit they ruin the whole story for me….

  2. Hi Smiley Face,
You’re right, it would be a longer wait, since you can read Manga/Anime so much faster. The few series that I have read had numerous volumes available when I started, so I didn’t have to wait in between books, which was great.
I completely agree with you… when the voices don’t sound right, it does throw you off. Have you ever watched any series with English subtitles? I watched Naruto in Japanese with English subtitles, and liked it because the voices seemed to fit with the characters more.

  3. As an otaku, I love how anime the different stories each one has to offer. While I’m anxiously awaiting the new episodes of (fill in anime here), i have the time to discover older animes such as Tenchi Muyo. If you asked me to pick between manga and anime, I’d rather not comment because the two mediums are inseperable.

  4. Hi William,
First of all, I had to look up the word ‘Otaku’… LOL! A lot of lingo was thrown my way in the Manga Club, and I never quite picked it all up… maybe one day 🙂
Your enthusiasm is excellent, and I love that instead of waiting for a particular series, you go ahead and discover new titles (well, new to you) and broaden your horizons. Out of curiosity, how do you like the older anime in comparison to the new ones?
