Grasshopper Jungle
Grasshopper Jungle, by Andrew Smith
Austin and Robby watched the first bug hatch out of the human it had incubated in. And they knew they had seen one of those 6-foot tall praying mantises before, too, in a jar. It didn’t take long to put it together – or for the mayhem to start in their small Iowa town, because bugs like to do two things: eat and, well, make more bugs. So now the question is – how DO you stop giant predators, get your girlfriend to forgive you, figure out your sexuality, and save the world in just a couple of days?

This book sounds really interesting, but at the same time, I’m a bit disturbed. Bugs scary me on their own, but I am inferring that this bug that hatched out is 6-foot tall, that just made me wince.
Ha, it is TOTALLY disturbing. and weird and gross and profane – and also really funny. It’s a sort of crazy book that shouldn’t really work because there’s so much stuff going on, but it really, really does, and it’s a wild ride of a read. I couldn’t put it down, I wanted to know what insane thing was going to happen next and how it would all end.
