The Long Earth
The Long Earth
I have to admit, as much as I love Science Fiction, books about simultaneously existing parallel earths have never really interested me.
Traditionally I have found those worlds to be too broad and too open for a plot to really make sense.
I picked up this book solely because of the name Terry Pratchett. As a fan of some of his previous work, I thought I would sample some of his writing outside of the Discworld Universe.
I am definitely grateful that I did.
Using a simple device consisting of a small box, some rudimentary wiring and a potato, people everywhere are now able to “step” to alternate versions of Earth.
The Long Earth follows Joshua and a reincarted Tibetan motorcycle repair man as they work their way through the myriad of Earths that comprise the Long Earth.
Why should you read this book? If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels, his writing is as clever as ever. If you have not read his Discworld novels, you might enjoy this because it does not feature the wizards and trolls and various other fairytale creatures present in the Discworld series.

I really liked this book and it’s sequel The Long War, and I see that the library has just ordered copies of the third in the series (Pratchett and Baxter have a contract for five books). Looking forward to The Long Mars!
I’m glad you like it as well. I found Lobsang to be one of the more interesting AI type characters that I have come across lately.
