Soldier Doll
Fifteen-year-old Elizabeth Bryant isn’t happy. She’s just moved halfway across the country thanks to her father’s military job, leaving all of her friends behind. One summer evening during her first week in a new city, Elizabeth spots a little soldier doll among the junk at a local garage sale. She buys it, thinking it would be great last-minute birthday gift for her father, who’s about to be shipped off to Afghanistan. What she doesn’t realize is that the doll might very well be a missing and very valuable historical artifact. With the help of Evan, a cute guy she met at a local used bookstore, Elizabeth discovers that this might be THE soldier doll – the inspiration for a famous World War I poem of the same name.
Interwoven with Elizabeth’s story is that of the soldier doll itself. Looking back through time, we follow the doll back to England during World War I, on to Nazi Germany in the 1930s, a Czech concentration camp during World War II, into Vietnam in 1970, and then through the aftermath of 9/11.
