EragonHello digital friends! Welcome to our weekly book trivia contest.

Every week we will be posting a new trivia question for your guessing pleasure.

Your trivia question this week comes courtesy of Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle.

In the novel Eragonour protagonist finds an egg which eventually hatches into a beautiful blue dragon.

Your question (for a sweet prize) is: How did Eragon's dragon Saphira get her name?

We have two prizes to give away, one for the first person to give the correct answer and another for the person who gives us the most creative answer!

We've only got a couple of rules:

1) You have to be a resident of the city of Toronto to win a prize.

2) Your answer has to be submitted by Thursday (July 3) at 11:59 PM if you want to win.

3) You need to provide us with a valid email address if you want to be considered for the prize. Otherwise, how will we get in touch with you? Don't worry, we'll keep your address secret (see below for more info).

Winners will be contacted at the end of the week.

  1. When Brom tells them about dragons and the Dragon Riders, he tells them about the names of the former dragons before the fall of the order. One of the names, was Saphira, a name of one of the former dragons. So when Eragon shares the list of names with her, and she chooses Saphira.

  2. The answer is very simple. Eragon and his dragon travel to the tall Mountains of Jasmine. Suddenly, it starts to rain…but it’s no ordinary rain…it’s rain that changes colour. Whenever this mysterious rain touched the flesh of the dragon, it turned Saphire. Now, you may be thinking that this is where she gets her name, but no, that’s too lame. Why would you name someone based on what colour rain turned when it made contact with them? So, this magic rain eventually formed a hole in the ground. The curious pair jumped down the hole, where they discovered this massive underground kingdom. The inhabitants of this empire all were mini-dragon like creatures! All with their own unique symbol and power. The duo were greeted by this odd looking dragon with a sun on his forehead. He explained that he would be their “light at the end of the tunnel” aka their “guide.” His name was Beacon. So Beacon took them to the king, who had the symbol of a bear (which represents leadership and courage) on his forehead. Evidently, his majesty was also known as the “Ursa Major.” The ruler examined the young dragon, and explained that in time, she will grow a symbol on her forehead, which would represent her special power, and she should be named accordingly. Miraculously, the young dragon grew a saphire on her forehead, at that exact moment. Ursa Major smiled, and concluded that her name shall be Saphira, and Eragon shall wait to see what her power becomes, but in the meantime, he can make educational guesses.
So ladies and gentlemen, that is the story of how young Saphira got her name. Clearly, I haven’t read the book. XD

  3. Is this really what happened? I haven’t read the book yet so I don’t know. Is the dragon’s reason for chosing Saphire based on her scale being sapphire?

  4. In the first book, when Eragon asked Brom about dragons and the Dragon Riders, he asked him about the names of the former dragons before the fall of the order. Amongst them was Saphira, the name of Brom’s former dragon. Later, Eragon shares the list of names with her, and she chooses Saphira
