The Inugami Clan, written by Seishi Yokomizo, one of the most famous Japanese mystery novelists, tells the tale of a family fighting for the family fortune. Translated by Yumiko Yamazaki, this novel is just one of the many stories featuring the detective Kosuke Kindaichi. The story starts off with the death of Sahei Inugami, the head of the wealthy Inugami family. Instead of leaving his fortune with his three daughters, Sahei decides to leave it to Tamayo Nonomiya, the granddaughter of a close friend. However, there is a condition attached: Tamayo must marry one of his three grandsons if she is to inherit the fortune. If anything happens to Tamayo or if she refuses to marry one of the grandsons, the fortune will then ultimately go to Shizuma Aonuma, Sahei’s illegitimate son. Thus, the fight for the family fortune begins as the Inugami family members compete against each other for Tamayo’s hand.

As the story progresses, the family history and dark secrets are revealed. The reason why Sahei decides to leave his fortune to Tamayo instead of his own family will all make sense as the murder and bloodshed that occurs within the Inugami family escalates. The author Yokomizo weaves together a beautiful mystery of how something as simple as greed can cause such a great tragedy.

  1. This sounds so dark yet intriguing. Usually I hate dark novels, but I might give this a try. Am I to guess that Shizuma will try to murder all the grandsons??? While plotting to murder Tamayo as well???
