It's been a while since I've read a good fantasy novel, but this book hooked me right in.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane is a riveting tale of friendship and courage. An unnamed man visits his old childhood home and recounts his mystical experience with three women — one of them a girl named Lettie Hempstock, with whom he forges a deep friendship. Then, an ominous force threatens the protagonist and his family, leading up to an epic battle at a lake Lettie calls her "ocean." Evil monsters and a controlling witch will define the protagonist's relationship with Lettie and himself.
Neil Gaiman does an effective job at mixing dark fantasy with reality. The characters are very much relatable and the reader will become immersed in Gaiman's fantastical, yet realistic setting. As a fan of contemporary fantasy, I find this novel to be a prime example of one. Each description of the settings and the characters is clearly written, eloquent, and easy to follow. Fans of more rural fantasy stories will enjoy this novel because of its countryside setting and Gaiman's ability to mesh in the supernatural.
Overall, I was hooked and satisfied with the ending. Any reader of fantasy novels can respect Gaiman's craftsmanship in The Ocean at the End of the Lane. It's a perfectly paced story with an extraordinary cast of characters. And one lesson that can be taken after finishing this book is that friendship is important because it allows us to realize our true potential.

Looks really interesting. When I first looked at the front cover, I thought it was a fantasy story about mermaids, but I guess it’s more than that.
Me too! I really thought it was about mermaids.
Honestly, the cover seemed very dark and kind of scared me, but the plot seems interesting.
Interesting book, I wanna read it. The characters sound realistic and understanding, while the atmosphere is very dark and brooding yet realistic and magical.
I would read it too, but the darkness of the book kind of pushed me away.
Yes it sounds like a well-crafted, modern day fantasy.
It sounds very creative, normally I don’t go for these kinds of books but I actually really want to read this one as it is apparen’t that this book is not a typical fantasy.
