Exercises come in all shapes and sizes: The Long Weekend edition

Canoe bookHey internet friends, happy long weekend to all of you. I am hoping you are all out there enjoying the sun or spending time with friends and family.

I am up at the cottage this weekend so I will be blogging about my favorite ways to get active over a vacation weekend.

Keeping your workout together during a holiday is no easy task as you are often away from home or your gym is closed or [insert family function] etc…

Because of this, many people often decide to take a break from their workout schedules to enjoy their vacation.

For those of you who insist on getting in a workout even when crunched for time, I have a few things that I like to do when I am away on vacation.

1) TABATA

No, I did not misspell Tabitha, TABATA is a training method that operates on a 20/10 split. Essentially you pick 4 movements that you want to work on, say Squats, Pushups, Lunges and Situps. You do 8 rounds of work/rest for each.

It looks like this:

Squat 20sec Rest 10sec, Pushups 20sec Rest 10sec, Lunges 20sec Rest 10sec, Situps 20sec Rest 10sec

Now imagine T is squats and A is rest, B is pushups and A is rest and you can see where the name came from.

This is my favorite exercise in a crunch because it leaves you burning and it only takes 16min. from start to finish!

2) Kayak/Canoe/Dragon boat

As I am up at the cottage I will be doing plenty of canoeing. If you have access to a Kayak or Canoe, this is a great workout as it really involves your core, arms, shoulders and back! It is also a great way to work on your cardio while on vacation. I really enjoy being out on the water and canoeing is a perfect way to relax and enjoy nature while also burning some excess calories.

That being said I hope you all had a great long weekend!

Your question this week, naturally, is what do you enjoy doing on the long weekends/holidays?

  1. TABATA sounds extreme. I can definitely see why it would be such a workout in a short period of time. Something about resting and exercising again is quite tiresome. For instance, for my P.E. examination, I had to complete the Beep Test. One of the components was to run 20m before the beep sound which occurs more and more frequently as time goes on. By the 16th lap, we are practically sprinting and stopping to turn back again. Mostly people can’t go on after 480m of this run. Which I found strange since I was wheezing afterwards even though I trained by running 2km. Guess slow and steady does win the race! While breakages in workouts works out our body even more so! Can’t wait to try TABATA since I don’t have much time to exercise anymore.

  2. Tabata is great and it’s something that I turn to often when I’m short for time. It works with any muscle group and the best part is that because of the the way it is structured, you don’t need weights to get a good workout

  3. My rugby coach made us do TABATA once and we nearly died! It was a very intense workout even though it was so short, but like you said it gets the work done and works all the spots that need to be worked!
