Q&A with The Gathering author Kelley Armstrong
In anticipation of the Word Out Launch next Wednesday, June 27, Kelley Armstrong discloses her favourite monster movie, weighs in on who would win a pie-eating contest between Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer and asks you to help build her summer reading list!
1. If you could have any supernatural power, what do you think would be the coolest?
I would love to be a werewolf because I think it would be amazing to experience life—temporarily, at least!–in a different form. The secondary characteristics would be cool, too, but those "extras" also make it hard for werewolves to blend, so if I was being very practical, I'd go with spell-casters. Their powers take work to learn, but overall they have fewer drawbacks.
2. What’s your favourite monster movie?
There are so many that it’s hard to choose. An American Werewolf in London is high on the list. It was frightening and funny and very different from anything else I’d seen at the time.
3. If you weren't a writer, what job do you think you’d have?
I’d be an unpublished writer. I would write whether I was getting paid for it or not. For a career, I’d have stuck with what I was doing while trying to get published, which was computer programming. I enjoyed it…just not as much as I did writing.
4. What do you like most about being a writer?
Entertaining readers. My goal is to tell a fun story, and if I succeed at that, then I'm happy. I'm particularly thrilled by emails from people who don't consider themselves "readers," but enjoyed one of my books, then go out looking for more to read. Too often kids learn to associate reading with schoolwork, and it's great when they learn it can be entertaining, too.
5. What’s the last Canadian book that you’ve read and really loved?
I’ve recently read a few advance copies of young adult books by Canadians that I enjoyed, but those aren’t out yet. So I’ll stick to books that are. For YA, I read Kenneth Oppel’s His Dark Endeavour last year and loved it. For adult, I really liked Ami Mckay’s The Virgin Cure.
6. What are you planning to read this summer?
I’ve been deeply immersed in writing this month, so I haven’t even begun to compile my summer reading list. I’m open to suggestions, though. 🙂
7. If Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer had a pie-eating contest, who would you put your money on?
That’s a tough one. Anne Rice has been publishing for more than thirty years and continues going strong, which is incredibly impressive. Stephenie Meyer came out of the gate like a speeding bullet, but she doesn’t seem to have any immediate plans to continue. So, based on that, I’d say it depends on if the contest is for eating the most pies or eating one pie the fastest. If it’s quantity, I’m putting my money on Ms. Rice. If it’s speed, I’ll go with Ms. Meyer.

Yes. I’ve read Richelle’s books–they’re wonderful…and she is too 🙂 I’ve definitely read Melissa’s–we’re actually co-authoring a new Norse-myth series starting next spring. Make sure you check out Melissa’s new YA novel–Carnival of Souls–this fall. It’s amazing! As for the rest, I’ve read most and will have to check out the ones I’ve missed. Thanks for the recommendations!

I think you should give The Agency trilogy, by Ying S. Lee,a try if you haven’t already read them-that is. The books take place in Victorian-England and basically a the protagonist, from a secret organization called The Agency, is disguised and placed into different locations in order to solve mysteries. I truly loved these three books and hoped for more until I found out that The Agency was a trilogy. I hope u enjoy reading them.
ive seen them uh never really picked them it… i will try now and read them !! wish i luv them
IF u like these then I would suggest you also give Heist Society by Ally Carter a try. SO far two of the books by the Heist Society are released. I loved them!!
