Word-outSo the hot, hazy, lazy days of summer have finally arrived!  Time to let your mind and imagination free to drift, explore and speculate.

So let's pretend you have 1 minute to speak to a fictional character (could be your favourite but it doesn't have to be!) you have encountered in a book at some point.

– who would it be?

– what would you say?

– how would you communicate (phone, texting, astral projection, whatever)?

Remember, for purposes of this contest, we are living in the realm of imagination so the possibilities are endless!   One entry per person please.

Contest ends midnight Friday July 13 (I hope no one is superstitious!)

  1. I would definitely have to say Lord Henry Wotton from Oscar Wilde’s novel, “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. He is a character who has an immense influence on Dorian Gray and in fact, leads him to the degeneration of his soul by getting him into hedonism. He had some radical theories, and he’s a very witty and intellectual character. I would like to discuss philosophy, and in particular, moral nihilism with him. Therefore, I would ask him for his views on the subject–since I only have one minute, that would really be all the time I would have.
I think that I would communicate with him in person, over tea. There’s no need to get fancy with a great orator like Lord Henry!

  2. I would talk to Hermione Granger from Harry Potter. She’s smart, witty and brave when she needs to be, and she’s never ashamed of what she is. I would meet her at her house. Here an idea of what our conversation would sound like:
Me- Hermione, are there any listening devices or spells on me?
    Hermione-(what she says)
Me- Thank you so much for letting me come to your house to talk with you! I’ll be brief with my questions, since we only have a minute.
    Hermione- (what she says)
Me- You see, I’m barely passing some of my tests, and I really need some advise for studying. I try to study, I really do, but I always forget the info. I don’t know why.
    Hermione- (What she says)
Me- I’ll try to do that. Thanks Hermione! Bye!
    Hermione- (what she says)
If there’s an extra minute or so I’ll ask her if she is happy where she is or if she longs for some new adventure.

  3. If I could meet anyone it would be Han Alister from the seven realms series by Cinda Wwilliams Chima. It is not a very widely known series, but Ms. Chima has managed to have created some of the most intriging and tragic characters I have ever come across. I have been hooked on the series for a while and Chima really lets you in on what both Han and Raisa are thinking and you can really see them evolve, but if I could talk to him it wouldn’t be about him or the books as I’ve practically memorized them all, but I would ask about what it would be like for him to live in present time Toronto. You see he was brought up with poverty and in a certain medival age setting. To get by he had gotten involved in the crime life and I would love to see the reaction he would have to our comfortable lifestyles, more complicated sense of crime, and advanced technology and medicine in place of his magic. I know it is odd, but you always wonder what it would be like if you could go into the book and experience their world why not have the characters wonder about our world for a change. Oh and I would communicate to him through Aediion a dream land that Ms.Chima created where with your mind you could change your very surroundings, and create all kinds of illusions. I know that was a lot, but that is what I would do if I could meet and talk to any book character.

  4. I would like to interview Mary Quinn,17, from The Agency series which takes place in Victorian-England. As part of a secret organization, she disguises as different characters in order to solve cases. Her recent disguises were being a man in a mine site and a maid at Buckingham Palace. Surprisingly, she pulls through and solves the mysteries! Some of the few questions I would like to ask her are as follow, through a letter:
    Dear Miss Quinn,
I would like to capture your story to inspire employees from clandestine organizations who wish to improve on their work. To begin with I would like you to tell me how much you have developed from being an orphan in poverty to being a part of a secret organization who has solved many cases. Had it been difficult? Also, what would you say have been the most difficult disguise you have worn-the man in the mine site or the poor maid in Buckingham Palace. Lastly, have you ever been taught on your missions. If yes, how did you manage in that situation. I will be waiting or your response Miss Quinn, but in the meantime thank you and goodbye.
    Sincerely,
    Maleeha

  5. The Harry Potter series feature a broad range of characters; some nice and some not so nice. One character who captured my attention was Rita Skeeter, a conceited journalist who takes pleasure in bending the truth. I would interview her because she makes a living out of interviewing others. As such, I would like to see how well she handles questions when directed to her.
I would contact her through the Floo Network (wizard’s method of communication using fireplaces). I would begin our 1-minute conversation by complementing her appearance (Oh Ms. Skeeter, those are wonderful crimson nails!), then I would ask her these two questions:
    1. Of all the people you’ve interviewed (cough…bothered), who was the most interesting?
    2. Which is more important in journalism: uncovering the truth or telling a good story?
Although annoying, Rita Skeeter is one of my favourite characters because she provides comic relief in the Harry Potter series. An interview with her, even if it lasts a minute, would be both interesting and enjoyable.

  6. I would like to interview Faramir from The Lord of the Rings series. I would like to ask him how he feels about his brother who passed away and his father who treated him unequally. I want to also ask him about his relationship with Eowyn. I would ask these questions through the phone or text because these are extremely personal questions. I would also ask him what is his favourite weapon is. Since we would be chatting through the phone I would ask him about how he is adjusting to the new technology.

  7. If I could I would interview Rumpelstiltskin
This is how I imagine it would go:
Interview on LIVE television with Rumpelstiltskin
Interviewer: We have all grown up hearing his story, we all know him like we know the evil step sisters, from Cinderella, the witch from Snow White, the –
Rumpelstiltskin: They get the point already, I am the antagonist of one of their favourite fairy tales, I am Rumplestiltskin.
Interviewer: Mr. Rumpelstiltskin we are so very happy to have you hear today
Rumpelstiltskin: Trust me, the pleasure is completely yours.
    *Interviewer moves uncomfortably in chair*
Interviewer: Rumpelstiltskin, tell me more about yourself
Rumpelstiltskin: I am an imp, we are magical creatures who can convert straws into gold,
Interviewer: Is that all you can do?
Rumpelstiltskin: We can poof in and out places, we have very sensitive hearing… I remember that one day I heard a lady crying in a castle…her father had lied to everyone that she could turn straws into gold..that fool..and the king had locked her in a castle and she was to convert those straws into gold or die.
Interviewer: Oh yes, I heard that story, you helped her and then demanded her first born, if I remember correctly?
Rumpelstiltskin: Demanded? Demanded? No… I had asked for a simple exchange. You see turning straws into gold it isn’t child’s play it takes a lot of magic…I could have ignored her cries…but instead I chose to help her, and you see we Imps cannot reproduce…a child would have helped fill the void in my life…made me happy, you see? I told her I would help her, make those straws gold…if and only if she gave me her first child in return. She agreed to give me her child. But humans incapable of fulfilling their promises.
Interviewer: You feel that you were not the villain in this case?
Rumpelstiltskin: If after this interview you asked for your pay, and your boss said “Oh, yeah your pay…I don’t want to pay you anymore, I have the money to give you but I want to keep it for myself” what would you say?
Interviewer: I would not be very happy, I would demand my pay…I would take him to court
Rumpelstiltskin: Well, for us magical creatures, court doesn’t exist, as well court wouldn’t believe we were real…I could have taken the child…it was rightfully mine now, but no I pitied the helpless lady, the second time now… the one thing one should never lose is hope..so I gave her hope…I told her if she guesses my name within 3 days she can keep the child. I hadn’t really thought she would, but one last hope I had to give her. Without hope this world has no light. I don’t know how but she found out my name..and I kept my promise and returned her child
Interviewer: That was quite sad…after going through all that..how does it feel still being considered the antagonist?
Rumpelstiltskin: In a story full of vices…the sole virtue is considered a vice, not the best feelings *laughs bitterly*
Interviewer: I don’t understand, there was no other vice..or bad guy in this story.
Rumpelstiltskin: The father that lied about his daughters ability to weave straws into gold, risking both his and his daughters life, was he not full of vices? The king who threatened to kill the girl, if her father turned out to be a liar, and when he saw she really could weave straws into gold – he married her, was he not full of vices? The girl herself, who promised her first child, and after receiving what she wanted broke her promse, was she not full of vices? Humans always think the one that is different is the bad guy, but in this story- or fairy tale – the humans were the bad guys, not the one that was different.
Interviewer: I am speechless…however we now have to go for a small commercial break, after this break we will be interviewing the Dwarf who rarely has a smile on his face yes…GRUMPY!
    *Commercial Break*

  8. An Interview With: Katniss Everdeen
    1. Who would it be?
Surely by the title displayed above, one can guess who I am about to conduct my interview with. Susanne Collins’ brilliantly created female protagonist that incorporates both sensual beauty as well as strength and femininity: Katniss Everdeen. The key character that would surely make for a remarkable interview. After being very accustomed to doing interviews of her own during the Hunger Games with Caesar Flickerman she would have no problems answering a couple questions from me.
    2. What would you say?
Good Morning/Afternoon/Evening/Day Mrs. Everdeen. What a pleasure it is to finally speak to one of the bravest people I have ever encountered along my literary journey as a young reader in this modern day and age. Sometimes, it’s nice to come across a story that brings together concepts of selflessness, unconditional love, duty, and just plain fear. I would like to thank you personally for doing what you did. Along time ago a famous preacher of peace and love, Mahatma Ghandi once said: “It’s the action, not the fruit of the action, that’s important. You have to do the right thing. It may not be in your power, may not be in your time, that there will be any fruit. But that doesn’t mean you stop doing the right thing. You may never know what results come from your action. But if you do nothing, there will be no result.”. You may not have heard of him, but that’s all right, I trust you more than understood his message because you did the right thing Katniss, and thank you for that. But anyways, I trust you and your husband Peeta and your children are doing well?
    Katniss: (Says her reply)
Must have been quite a shock to have children of your own especially after during your more youthful years vowing to not have any. But I can understand your perspective when you said that, especially during the conditions and times you were living in. Do you feel Panem will continue to strive? Do you believe that the scars of the past will still be felt in the present? What do you think the people have learned from the events that occured?
    Katniss: (Says her reply)
What do you feel we as a country- Canada specifically or North America to be more general can learn from the events of the Hunger Games? After visiting my world you probably have some sense of how we as a race and a people communicate and navigate our moral responsibilities through these times?
    Katniss: (Says her reply)
Now, I know for one thing you are an extremely good hunter. Do you feel that your hunting skills prepared you for the Hunger Games? And in what ways did you feel you were at a disadvantage with your survival fortitude?
    Katniss: (Says her reply)
Well Katniss,I think that’s all the time we have for today. Our one-minute interview special programming has inevitably come to a close, and I’d like to thank you for your appearance here tonight/this evening/today/this afternoon, I know you will make an excellent mother and wife, and continue to inspire the people of Panem with your story, and how the power of a truthful voice can be louder than many other untruthful ones.
    3. How would you communicate?
Communicating in Panem can be rather costly. I don’t believe my calling card can call that far a distance. So I would have my trusty friend secure an internet connection that sends a satellite signal feed from my part of the world to Katniss’ fictitious world of Panem and communicate with her directly through a live video conference, more so like cross-dimensional skype if you will. To prevent spys from hacking and “watching” our interview I’ve set up some Mutts, and TrackerJackers in place to search out and detect any unwanted audiences. 😛
And that my friends would be my one-minute interview with the one and the only Katniss Everdeen, saver of Panem, inspirer of children in the real world. 🙂

  9. Hmmm…If i were to be able to communicate with any fictional character, I’d choose Arisa Sonoda, who is in the brilliant manga called Arisa. The reason that I would want to communicate with her is because she attempted suicide when she had a perfect life, leaving her twin sister, Tsubasa Uehara with all the pain and work. See, it all started when Arisa got a letter from the king from king time saying that she was a traitor. In the manga, king time appears to be a session each Friday at Arisa’s school, where all the students would gather together to send a wish via cellphone to a mysterious identity known by everyone else as the king. So then each session, somebody’s wish would be randomly chosen, and the king will grant their wish. All the students respect and are very loyal to the king, as he is so powerful and important. Whoever does not believe in the king will recieve a letter known as the traitor letter. The letter will be posted on the school bulletin board and sent to the student as well saying that he or she is a traitor. Once the traitor letter is released, everyone in the school will act as if the “traitor” does’t exist. the traitor will be bullied by getting their desks piled up with trash, pushed aaround, and gossiped, and he or she will be ignored as well. So when Arisa decides to exchange lives with Tsubasa for a day, Tsubasa tells Arisa how great her life is and shows Arisa the traitor letter. However, I guess that Arisa was afraid of going back, due to bullying that is soon to occur, and Arisa makes an attemopt to suicide, by falling out the window. As as result, Tsubasa decided to take Arisa’s identity in order top figure out who the real king was, and to gain revenge on him. So from there on in, Tsubasa pretended to be Arisa and did everything that she did, with everyone believing that she’s Arisa, while the real Arisa’s placed in a coma. But Tsubasa soon finds out Arisa is the king. So at that point, I was shocked at the result that Arisa was the king. II have so many questions to ask her, like why did you jump out the window…what were you thinking…There is just so many mysteries unsolved with this character. People from all around the world are posting blogs and threads online asking people wh they think is the king, and why Arisa wanted to kill herself… So I want to be able to ask her why she killed herself, and why she decided to send out mean traitor letters. She has such a kind, and warm personality, she’s the class rep who everyone looks up to. I want to solve these questions and post them online so all the Arisa fans can get the answers that they are dying to know. So I would contact Arisa by person to have her tell the answer straight to my face, because if it is by phone or email, I don’t really know if it is the Real Arisa right? It could be a scam artist or somebody else, and it is easier to tell if she is lying in person, then by text messaging because you can hear the tone of their voice, and see the expresion on their face. I will interview her in the hospital, since she has just woken up and she has to stay i the hospital for a while. I will try to make her feel calmer and more welcome by bringing her favorite snav=cks and some tea, hospital food is BORING. I’d start by giving her a 10 second introduction to who I am. Then the next 10 seconds would be my questions, and the next 40 seconds would be for her answers. Plus, I going to get a group of security guards just in case she tried=s to hit me or something. who knows? I’d also get a doctor to be around, just in case she gets a heart attack from my questions. Moreover, I’d [lace her boyfriend in a huge human sized metal cage along with 5 huge, bulky lumberjacks with huge chainsaws in their hands to pretend to threate her boyfriend, if she does not answer the questions. Mwahahaha/ The lumberjack will just PRETEND. By blackmailing her and getting her boyfriend involved, my plan will be perfect, and I’ll get all the answers the world Arisa fans want to hear as expected. Afteralll, her boyfriend is who she spends every single day with. she tells him all her secrets, and they arem really close as well.

  10. 1.Who would your character be?
If I could have an interview with a character of my choice for just one minute i would chose Gale from my favorite trilogy of all time, the hunger games. I have chosen Gale to do my interview with because he is a very mysterious character and he had proved that theory correct in mockingjay(the third and final book in this amazingly captivating and suspenseful trilogy)when he had left District 12 after he had killed Prim(Katniss’s sister),by accident. When the book ended i was left pondering, what had happened to Gale? Did he fall in love with someone else? Why did he leave after all he and Katniss had been though?,the questions were endless.I am glad that i can have an interview with gale so i can i finally have some of my questions put to rest.
    2.What would you say?
First and foremost i would greet him. After, i would get right to business,i would ask him some of the questions that were not answered in the book, like, Why did you leave district 12?Was it because you wanted a better job or because you just couldn’t face Katniss after what you had done? Why didn’t you tell Katniss you were leaving, after all you were her best friend?I would just keep asking him more questions like those and i would make sure he gives me thorough and explanatory answers. After all, this is a once in a lifetime chance so i have to make it count, don’t want it to go to waste, right?
    3.How would you communicate it?
I would have my interview with gale in person because Gale is more used to talking in person and he did live in district 12, a place ravaged by poverty. My interview would either be in the outer forests of district 12, because for most of the trilogy he was in the forest hunting for game with Katniss, another place i would interview Gale is in district 2 because that is where he currently resides after he committed that tragic incident with Prim.

  11. I would definitely like to interview the one and only Andrew Laeddis, a disturbed inmate person who the doctors are trying to rehabilitate. He is capable of developing fictional narratives because he feels guilty and hurt when he murdered his own wife, Rachel Solando, thus creating a secondary persona called Edward ‘Teddy’ Daniels. Edward ‘Teddy’ Daniels is really Andrew Laeddis, an anagram of his name. He made the fictitious character so he won’t remember remember the traumatic events when his wife murdered his children. The main topic that I would really like to interview with him is what happened in the ending of the scene, I would like him to explain it in detail because it seemed very ambiguous and confusing to me. As he discovers he murdered his own wife because she murdered her kids, he wakes up as the Andrew Laeddis. I live far away from the hospital he is in because he is located in an island called Shutter Island in Boston Harbor. The only way I can communicate with Andrew by using our phenomenal telepathic abilities to communicate with each other.
Me: Why did you mention the statement
‘’Do you think it’s better to live as a monster, or die as a good man’’?
Andrew Laeddis: The thing is, I feel like the pain and guilt of me killing my wife would be too heavy to carry and I wouldn’t want to continue living with the guilt for my entire life. I would rather pretend to live as Edward ‘Teddy’ Daniels, my secondary persona and be
lobotomized rather than live with the knowledge that I am a murderer.
Me: What choice have you chosen then?
Andrew Laeddis: To live as a good man.
Me: Why is that? You don’t want be lobotomized, do you?
Andrew Laeddis: That’s the thing I CANNOT live any longer! I just cannot afford to live in absolute reality, it’s too painful to accept. I would rather be lobotomized rather than live with the sins of Andrew Laeddis…
Me :ANDREW! ANDREW! Are you there? Why aren’t you replying to my questions? Dang it! Seems like I lost connection of him.

  12. Q&A with Sherlock Holmes, via typewriter:
Me: Do you ever give yourself any downtime? STOP
Sherlock: my schedule is highly unpredictable, so it’s not in my control. STOP
Me: What’s your favourite British English phrase? STOP
Sherlock: Anything from My Fair Lady! P.S. I like how you spelled “Favourite” with a “u”! STOP
Me: Did you get special training to develop your detective skills, or did it come totally naturally? STOP
Sherlock: I had to take the initiative to keep reading encyclopedias and studying hard in school, so that I could acquire my current knowledge STOP By jove, nowadays you have access to internet, which is how you’re able to access great resources like the Toronto Public Library and Word Out! STOP
Me: Yes, I agree! Lastly, do you have any advice for aspiring detectives? STOP
Sherlock: Stay on the hunt and don’t give up on any leads! STOP

  13. After all the work and creativity that you folks have put into your imaginary interview it wouldn’t be right to do a random draw (but it would be much easier!). Based on what I have read so far, it is going to be extremely difficult to choose a winner – all the entries have merit.

  14. I will like to interview Alice Cullen from Twilight.
Thank you Alice for accepting this interview-I am soooo excited!
There are so many questions to ask you but we only have 1 minutes so I am going to use this wisely.
Me-Which decade do you like the best?
Alice-I like all the decades since it a new experience everytime but of course the most special was when I met the Cullen family
Me-What have you seen that is the most amazing with your special skill?
Alice-I have seen a lot but the ones that touch me the most are from the ones I love
Me-OK…here is the most important question of all…what is the lottery number for next week?
    Alice-mmmmm…if I tell you then I will have to kill you….joking 😛
Alice was able to conduct this interview in person by tracking me down with her special power!

  15. I’d find it interesting to interview Opal Kaboi from Eoin Colfer’s “Artemis Fowl” series via Skype (or another video/voice/instant messaging application) because I’d be able to see her facial expressions and hear her voice without having to worry about having an actual insane, power-mad pixie genius in the same room with me.
Since I’m unfortunately neither a pixie nor Eoin Colfer, I don’t think I can presume to know what Opal would say, so I’ve just included my questions (and not her answers) here.
Q: You’re completely obsessed with world-domination, but have you actually thought about what you’d actually do if and when you install yourself as the supreme ruler of both the fairy and human world?
Q: What words would you use to describe Artemis Fowl? What’s it like being constantly beaten by a 14-year-old human despite you having an IQ of 300 and having already illegally augmented your magical abilities?
Q: The most recent information on you is that you’re currently living in a metal box in prison. Do you have any plans for your escape that you’d be willing to share? …or have you escaped already?
Q: If you could give just one book recommendation to all the young and budding future villains out there who see you as a role model, what would it be?
I’d probably have to wrap up and thank Opal for her time after that last question. Sixty seconds is not a lot of time!

  16. One particular character I would be very intrested to interview is Sayuri, from Memoirs of a Geisha. Even though the book was in the format of Sayuri recalling her past and telling a bibiographer the story as her memory, I want to know how she actually felt in her mind as the events passed by. I am also very curious of Sayuri’s appearance, so I can see how she actually looks if I interview her. In the book she doesn’t explain detaily of her face features, but only that she has ice blue eyes. I would interview her in a japanese tea garden, since that is where Sayuri is most comfortable and used to.
Q: Now I know that you never did find your sister after all these years, but if you can predict, what do think has become of your sister Satsu, if you’re comfortable answering this question?
Q: It’s obvious how you feared of becoming like Hastumomo in your near future, though I can see its definite this has not come true. Why do you think she always have disliked you from the start to when she has disappeared?
Q: I know you were very surprised when you found out your paren’ts had sold you and your sister, but what did you think of them when you found out this?
Q: You had experianced a very gruesome event which was World War II. What is your opinion of the war, and how did you feel when Nobo-san told you that his company with the chairman was broke after the War?
(These are just some of the questions I am most curious about, but I can’t ask Sayuri all of them since then it won’t be one minute. I also don’t know how she would answer; this is why I want to interview her.)

  17. 1. If I had the chance to speak with a fictional character, then I would definitely choose to interview David from Scott Westerfeld’s Uglies. David is a non-ugly, non-pretty, and non-special person, born in The Smoke where beauty means nothing and freedom is true. In the novel, David helps runaways from Uglyville go to The Smoke in order to escape the required operation to becoming pretty at the age of sixteen. I would like to interview him in that first book before the storyline even begins, as a girl from Uglyville debating on whether I should become pretty in Pretty Town or stay ugly and live in The Smoke for the rest of my life.
    2. Well, the problem is David will meet uglies at the Rusty Ruins in the dead of the night. The only way for him to know you’re there waiting for him is to light a sparkler (imagine the ones used at birthday parties and such) at the top of a high building so he can see your signal. Since I would only have one minute to speak with him, then I would communicate with him through morse code via flashlight. It seems bizarre, but David is a resourceful and intelligent guy who reads many of the books in The Smoke’s library, of which collects many of the traditional and ancient books of our time (us being the Rusties, who are long gone and dead). As a result, he would be able to understand the morse code and would be able to communicate back as he always has a flashlight with him (and other survival gear).
    3. In my quick one-minute interview, I would ask him what The Smoke is to him personally, and what it means to us uglies from Uglyville. I would then ask if the risk of escaping the operation to become pretty and journeying to The Smoke is worthwhile. I’d ask this because tt has been said that many uglies venture to The Smoke to escape the operation, so many stayed at The Smoke and were never seen again and then there have also been talk that those who went to The Smoke also left and changed their mind (wanting to become pretty after all). Next, I’d ask if he’s afraid that The Smoke would one day be caught by Special Circumstance (sort of like the government in our society). Hearing the answer would be interesting because *SPOILER ALERT* The Smoke does get caught, collapses, and all because of an ugly who lied to their face and said she wanted to escape the operation. I always wonder why David and The Smoke people are so trusting when they spread stories about The Smoke to new uglies. Lastly, I would ask if David wishes to become pretty. He was born an ugly and without the expectation of becoming pretty since he was born out of Uglyville, so it’d be interesting to know if he would choose to become a pretty in his own free will.
This is an extra part you don’t have to read. As others had made their interview a dialogue, I wanted to write my interview into a quick written piece, but all the three aspects I wrote above are in this piece, so there’s no need to read it. Unless you’re interested. Then by all means, I hope you enjoy it:
*I think it’s important to note that Croy is a friend of my character and of David as well, as Croy was an ugly and now lives in The Smoke.

Midnight suited best on the Outside. There, atop the highest building at the Rusty Ruins, the skyline was clear and open. The stark darkness of the Uglyville clashed with the bright lights and excitement of Pretty Town, an obvious gap between my life and what it will soon be. Unless I escaped.
I quickly took out a safety sparkler from my bag and set my hoverboard down. Feet firmly flat on the floor, I stopped to listen. The Rusty Ruins was in a complete solitude of silence, echoing nothing between buildings and empty cars down below. Would the rumoured David be here? Without a second to lose, I lit the sparkler and raised it to the moon. The flashing sparks danced before me and I looked for any sign, any clue of acknowledgement. But nothing happened.
I waited a second. Thirty seconds. A minute.
It’s said that David doesn’t respond quickly, sometimes not even a day, but I needed him quickly. I needed answers. Fully prepared, I snatched the rest of the stolen safety sparklers from my bag and lit another. I gripped the sparklers in one hand as the other waved the light around, and I felt my patience growing thin and a new found anxiety circling me. “I don’t have much time!” I cried out.
Then I saw it. Past the tall trees below, I saw a small red flashlight flickering on and off. He’s close. What should I do? Recalling the rumours of his ‘vast intelligence’, I whipped out my flashlight and signaled him in morse code: Do you know morse code? The patterned on and off of his flashlight answered Yes. In a panic, I quickly signaled all the questions that came to mind: What is living in The Smoke like? Is it worth living there? Aren’t you afraid that some uglies will rat The Smoke out to Special Circumstance? Don’t you wish you could become pretty?
When nothing else came to mind and I turned off my flashlight, I realized what an idiot I was. How was he supposed to answer all those questions? He won’t even be able to understand them all with how quick I was giving them. But then David’s flashlight turned on. He answered all my questions in a flash, giving me all the right answers that I needed reassurance in. The Smoke is freedom; it’s life without rules and inferiority. It’s worth living here if you want to be your own person and trick and hoverboard everyday. Only those reliable and trustworthy enough were told about The Smoke. He then added: Should I be worried in confiding in you?
I quickly replied: Not at all! Croy told me about The Smoke and I want to join; I’m just not one hundred percent sure.
Standing there and soaking in all that quick information of bright lights, I waited for his answer to my last question. With the return of complete darkness, it dawned on me just how much closer David’s light had been shining after every flash…
“I’ve heard stories of uglies becoming pretty and never again being the way that they used to be. If being pretty means losing myself, then I don’t think turning pretty is worth anything.”
I snapped my head down to the ground below as I heard a crisp male voice. David was real. My face must’ve been one of surprise as he chuckled and looked down at himself, as if saying, I’m an ugly, just like you. I smiled brightly and pressed a button on a device that I found in the ruins, something labeled Stopwatch.
“42.08 seconds,” I commented aloud, “I guess I caught you on a lucky day, huh? They say it’s rare for you to respond so quickly. And through morse code, matching my lightning speed?” I whistle, impressed.
“Timing our little morse code conversation? Now you’re really making me doubt you. Are you sure you’re not a spy?” He stared at me suspiciously then. Rolling my eyes, I jump on my hoverboard and coasted down to his level at top speed.
“If I was a spy, do you really think I’d be wasting my time up there talking to you when I could have captured you within an instant?”
“Not unless this is a trap and any second now a fishing net is going to fall over me.”
    “A fishing what?”
David simply smiled at my confusion and I realized just how real the whole thing was. David is real, The Smoke is real, and, in a couple of hours, I’ll be meeting David again on the night of my birthday. The day I don’t become pretty.
“Thanks, for your time I mean. Meet you again soon?” I asked.
David nodded his head and waved as I took the hoverboard to the white waters leading to Uglyville for the last time.

  18. Thanks, Rajiv! I liked reading yours, too! Rita Skeeter is such an interesting and under-appreciated character. 🙂

  20. If I have a chance to interview a fictional character is gonna be Digory Kirke from The Magician’s Nephew (The Chronicles of Narnia) – he’s also the old professor who owns the big mansion(probably most of us know from the 2nd book, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) where the Pevensie lives and discover the Narnia from the wardrobe.
The Magician’s Nephew is the first book that C.S Lewis started to write and it’s the beginning of all. Digory Kirke is the first person who discover another world which called Charn (which eventually become Narnia). He and his friend, Polly, was send to Charn by Digory’s Uncle, Andrew, who believe in magic and the other world between the world. When Digory landed on the Charn, he was going to find Polly and come back to England, but he instead go exploring the Charn with Polly and everything start from there.
The place that I would choose to interview him is in Narnia, because Narnia is an awesome world, I’m going to go into the wardrobe and -ta-dah- I’m in Narnia. The place of nature, and place where the animal can’talk and I could meet Aslan too (at the end of the interview) We’re going to have a nice evening walk and talk about this:
    1. Okay, so how do you like Narnia so far? Since you and your friend, Polly were the first people who explore this world, do you find it different from now?
And would you think it’s the best place to escape from the real world?
    2. Well first of all I’m sorry to bring back this past, I hope it’s okay for you. So, Jadis, the evil white Queen wake up, because of you ring the bell. What were you thinking at that time when you decide to ring the bell and just realize that the evil Queen wants someone to ring the bell to wake her up?
Do you regret your action? And how do you fell now?
    3. At the end, you choose to plant the apple, and you used the tree to create the wardrobe. What was your purpose of creating the wardrobe? Is it to let other generations, such as the Pevensie, to see Narnia? And what if bad people knows about this, and try to get into Narnia? Well, I hope bad people never find their way to Narnia.
As I’m listening to his story and answers, we still walking around the woods and the the castle, after that we would have an evening tea and I would really be happy to listen more of his story and tell me more about the history and anything about Narnia and Charn 🙂

  21. Have you ever heard of a book called “Beautiful Creatures”? It is a book written by Kami Garcia & Margaret Stohl. This story is about a guy named Ethan Wate is haunted by dreams of a girl he’s never met. When Lena Duchannes moves into his small southern town of Gatlin County, Ethan is inexplicably drawn to her. Ethan is determined to uncover the strange connection between them, even if it means uncovering the one secret that could change everything. By the way, this is probably one of my favourite teen books that I have EVER read.
If I would get a chance to talk to one of the characters in this book, I would talk to Ethan Wate, face to face, at the beginning of this novel after he arrives late on the first day of school with his friend, Link. As he was walking down the hallway he saw me at my locker and decided to approach me.
Me: Hey man. How’s it going?
Ethan: I’m doing pretty good. Hey Joseph, have you ever heard of a song called Sixteen Moons? (he pulls out his iPod and looks for the song)
Me: I’ve never heard that song before in my life! Hey have you seen the new girl here? Old Man Ravenwood’s niece is going to be attending Jackson High this year.
Ethan: Yeah, I keep on hearing everyone talking about her but I haven’t actually seen her yet. Do you know what she looks like?
Me: Yeah dude she’s smoking hot! She’s even hotter than Savannah Snow in my opinion.
Ethan: Wow! That’s awesome. I guess I’ll keep an eye out for her today and see what she looks like. Hey Joseph, if you ever find out about this song, can you let me know about it?
Me: Sure, why not? This music lover will have a look at it later and get back to you on it.
Ethan: Thanks man. (the bells rings warning everyone to go to their next class) I guess I better get going to class now. I’ll talk to you later then.
Me: See you later, Ethan. (when he is a distance away from me) I wonder what’s bothering him. He seems to be acting kind of strange today. He rarely ever talks to me and let alone, he never talks to me about music. Hmm, whatever.

  22. I would probably want to interview Mia from 172 Hours on the Moon. Mia is from Norway and is one of the three lucky teenagers that get the one in a life time opportunity to travel to the moon. I would use satellite television technology combined with hologram technology that has been specially designed to conduct this interview. She has been on the moon for more than 100 hours and is returning back to earth very soon.
    Interview Questions
    Q. Are you liking your experience on the moon? What do you like best/least? How does space food taste?
    Q. Do you miss your friends and family back on earth? What would you like to say to them right now?
    Q. Are you (if you can) bringing any moon rocks home?
    Q. Not you scare you or anything, but there are many speculations that there is extraterrestrial life out there in space. Do you believe in the possibility of aliens in space or perhaps on the moon as well? Any signs of life there?
    Q. What do you think will happen to your life after this
amazing experience you had on the moon? More trips to outer space?
    -after the Q&A-
    *shakes hand with hologram Mia*
Me: Thank you Mia for this interview! I hope you and everyone else on the moon journey arrives back on earth safely. Farewell and goodluck!

  23. I’d definitely choose to talk to Margaret from “Are you There God? It’s Me Margaret”. This novel is written by my favorite author in my childhood – Judy Blume. I read this book when I was 11 – the same age as Margaret. Now, I’m that I’m a bit older; I can understand how she feels.
I would love to give her a big hug, talk to her through person and shake her hand. She’s so much like me, yet she’s a strong female character! She’s uncertain about decisions on religion and she’s starting to notice puberty and boys. I would tell her about being older – I’m about 5 years her senior and I’ve experienced a WHOLE lot since I’ve thought like the age of an 11 year old  Meeting her in person would give me a lovely first impression and a good laugh with her.
    1. If you could be any character in fiction, whom would you be? (This shows Margaret’s interests and personality even though she’s a fictional character herself!!)
    2. If you had only 6 months to live, what would you do with the time? (This absolutely shows Margaret’s creativity, goals, and planning. I, myself, don’t have many good planning skills, but if I knew Margaret’s goals, it would be very inspiring for me.)
    3. If you met a genie and it allotted 3 wishes for you, what would your 3 wishes be? (As an eleven year old, I’m sure Margaret would consider this deeply and certainly seriously. I would be reminded of the life as an 11 year old girl and of her creative imagination skills!)
    4. If you could broadcast one message to all the 11-year old girls around the world, what would you say and why? Would you gossip? Or would you tell a small secret that only you know and you’d want to share it with the rest of the world.
I would close up my interview with her and give her an amazingly dazzling smile – a smile so reassuring that it would calm maybe a small fear. She’s creative and so much stronger than I am – I deeply respect her as one of my heroines.

  24. If I could speak to any fictional character, I would talk to Bertha Mason from Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre”. Bertha is usually referred to as the madwoman in the attic. However, I feel as if she is misunderstood by characters within the novel and readers alike. Her madness is inherited through family and not of her doing. I would tell her that I admire her fighting spirit and not to give up. Hopefully, I would be able to convince her not to commit suicide!
I would have this conversation with Bertha through telephone (since she isn’t exactly safe to be around) before she meets Jane Eyre.

  25. For a while after reading Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day I;ve been thinking about the two main characters, the butler Steven and his assistant Miss Kenton. I really wish that Steven were not the type of person that he finds himself to be near the end of his life. The last chapter is particularly frustrating, since his lighthearted eagerness to see Miss Kenton feeds into an irritatingly sincere disillusionment with Steven’s identity. If impossible things could happen, I would communicate through the medium of Miss Kenton in that second before she boards the bus to go back to her family, after refusing one of the only requests Steven has ever made in his life, for reasons and responsibilities that they both understand the weight of and yet accept, and I would ask Steven “Why?”
Of course he wouldn’t respond, at least until later. And it would be in his character not to say anything at all, or perhaps I would get a monotone “Miss Kenton, is something the matter?” But perhaps Steven could turn himself around in that minute, and for once seize the opportunity presented to him to share his own thoughts rather than those of others.

  26. If I could interview a character I’d probably interview Scott Pilgrim from the “Scott Pilgrim vs The World books”.
Since Scott is pretty lazy the interview would probably happen through simple one worded (on his end) text messages.
    Me: Hi, Scott!
    Him: do i know u?
    Me: Not yet 😀
    Him: well, ok thn.
Me: So can I ask you a couple of questions? It’s for uhh…an assignment!
Him: will u stop txting me if i agree?
    Me: Sure!
    Him: fine.
Me: How does it feel to live life like its a video game?
Him: y is ur grammr so gud? were txting.
    Me: Just answer the question.
Him: uh well…it sucks when i die and have to rely on an extra life, but its awsum whn i get a prize, like free food!
Me: *muttering as I look at my phone* You’re more of an idiot than I thought you were…
    Him: any othr q’s?
    Me: “q’s”?
    Him: questions?
Me: is it really that hard to write the word, questions?
    Him: whatevr, are we done?
Me: One more question! How does it feel to get beat up by one or more of Ramona’s evil ex’s each book?
Him: y does evryone ask tht?
Him: goodbye im goin to sleep
    Me: Bye! 🙂
