Fiction Addict

I've always thought of myself as an addicted reader – piles of books on my night table (in fact most tables), bookshelves crammed & overflowing, a novel tucked into my purse – you get the idea.

Then I met a woman, who mentioned casually that one of the great things about living in the 21st century was that she enjoyed having 4 different books in 4 different formats on the go at the same time – she was listening to an audio book in her car, had an eaudiobook on her player, an ebook on her reader and a hardcover or paperback on her nightstand (promo here – all the books were from the library)!

My definition of 'addicted' reader shifted at this point as I had to accept that I didn't have her level of commitment and utter flexibility (earbuds bother me and I often forget to charge my reader).  However I did find her delight quite inspiring and I am determined to find comfortable earbuds and constantly check the batteries in my electronic gadgets – I'll have to think about the CD's though – I've often missed my subway stop because I'm totally absorbed in my book – I'm afraid my dubious driving might escalate to 'dangerous' if I was caught up in a deliciously exciting story.

I wonder what other formats will be around 10 years from now…..thoughts?

  1. We’ll be so “in-tune” that they’ll embed a chip into our ear drums so that we’ll forget about the ear buds. Maybe a pill to eat and you’ll have a whole story to hear?

  2. Wow that woman is really committed to reading, but for me as well I can’t stand listening to stories and only recently have i converted to reading books online as well (wattpad) lol. Recently I haven’t read as much as i used to because of school and summer school. And also the fact that i’m learning japanese, makes me feel guilty every time i’m not reading a japanese book and instead reading an english book. But reading is awesome and i always try to promote it ’cause people don’t know what they’re missing out on.

  3. wow she’s so awesomeeeeee, and that’s really cool.
it will be cool if there’s a device that project our imagination out just like a movie playing that we can see while we read the book. I always want one!! well, hope in 10 years someone will invent that kind of device 😀
