BATTLE OF THE BOOKS – Live Report!

July 6, 2009 | Alan H. | Comments (50)

(Somewhat) real time updates from the Battle!

7:10 PM: Christian Potenza’s closing point for the supremacy of Jerk, California: “It’s orange!”

7:15 PM: Megan Fahlenbock is going for dramatic readings from the text of Pieces of Me

7:20 PM: J. Wyze talking about his dreams and sleeping at school as part of his defense of Wake

7:26 PM: One of our Youth Advisory group members on the panel is doing a great reading of excerpts from Jerk, California

7:29 PM:  YAG member relating Wake to superhero themes.  “With great power comes great responsibility!”  Also featuring Madonna lyrics

7:33 PM: Another YAG member on Wake: “I read 100 pages in a day, which is really an achievement.”  Praises length (short!)

7:40 PM: Team Pieces of Me is playing the nationalism card–not only is this the only Canadian book in the Battle, but it’s also originally in French, so can be read in both official languages.

7:42 PM: Pieces of Me–shorter than the others!  Featuring real people, not superheroes!

7:44 PM: Pieces of Me praised for realistic depiction of teenage girls.

7:46 PM: Jerk, California–so good it doesn’t even seem like reading sometimes! (Christian)

7:47 PM: Meghan: “I think what Christian just said is a great point on behalf of our book.”

7:47 PM: J. Wyze and Christian fighting back against the nationalism card.  “Good literature doesn’t have borders.”

7:48 PM: Meghan: “You should read all three of the books.  But ours first.”

7:49 PM: Christian is repeating his point about Jerk, California being orange.  It’s definitely indisputable.

7:50 PM: Live reporting temporarily interrupted by blogger having to run to bathroom.  Back soon!

7:54 PM: Was able to hear the panelists arguing from the other side of the building.  Came back and fortunately no chairs had been thrown.  But they’re getting very heated.

7:55 PM: Someone is making barking noises, but I’m not sure who!

7:56 PM: Now they’re arguing about which book’s character has the worst life.

7:57 PM: Pieces of Me summed up: “Like classy Italian bread.”

7:58 PM: Wake summed up: “A rollercoaster ride.”

8:00 PM: Jerk, California: “It’s orange.”

All the teams have made very strong arguments for their books and we’ll be going to voting now.  Updating soon with the winners!

8:23 PM: I got to make a speech about the website.  I have it on good authority that the audience was enthralled.

8:26 PM: The winner is about to be announced!

The Results

3rd place: Pieces of Me

2nd place: Jerk, California

THE WINNER: Wake

Intense drama and excitement!

  1. You can’tell I was liveblogging the event because of all the spelling and grammar mistakes I made (I’m leaving them in for that raw, live-from-the-action feel).
Thanks to everyone who came out and made it a great event!
Did a lot of you take pictures? I’d like to figure out a way for you to send them in if you did.

  11. Battle of the Books was such a fun event! I really enjoyed the funny debates between the books and how each group read a little from their own novel. It really gave us a taste of what we were choosing from. I hope this is an annual event, as I would like to attend more BotB!

  13. Wake wins! Yay! Although I haven’t read it yet, I’m sure it’s an awesome novel. By the way, Battle of the Books sounds like a cool event. I wish I had gone. Hm…maybe next year.

  15. The books in this event seem cool but I think there are better books than these….such as “Blood and Chocolate”, “Twilight”, “In the forests of the night” and many more…..but these books are good as well….i guess all books are good…it just depends on what type of books interest you and I am more into the action vampire romance kind of books……I wish I could have gone but I just heard about it now….so maybe next year…

  17. i will have to agree with Jasmine… the Twilight saga would make a good arguement battle, since so many people are into it, and it is so popular now a days… Twilight would probably win the battle…
