Book Recommendations

July 31, 2009 | Alan H. | Comments (252)

Here's a post for book recommendations (making, asking, whatever).  It's permanently linked from the lefthand sidebar of the site as "Review/Recommend" (under the "Explore the Site" navigation section), so you can find it again easily even after it ceases to be a recent post.

A few of my own to start things off:

Cecil Castellucci's The Plain Janes and its sequel Janes In Love are wonderful graphic novels about teen friendship, romance and discovering your creative side.

Diane Duane's So You Want to Be a Wizard and all the other books in the series are probably my favourite young adult fantasy novels of all time.  Mature, humane, action-packed and superbly written.

Finally, two book that were important to me in high school:

  • Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five, one of the greatest anti-war novels ever from an absolutely unique writer.
  • Nonfiction recommendation: Joseph Campbell's The Hero With a Thousand Faces.  A great book on the fundamental similarities of world mythology and their modern equivalents in comics, movies and television. Changed my perspective on a lot of things.

This doesn't mean don't talk about books you've enjoyed or would recommend to others in any other posts (please keep doing as you're doing, all the comments are great!), but several of you have mentioned that a more permanent place for recommending books would be nice, so here it is. 🙂

Teen readers and TPLers, post your recommends here as well!

Alan H is a web librarian at Toronto Public Library.  He reads all over the place.

  23. However, there is one series that completely rocks! It is called the Darkest Powers series and it is written by Kelly Armstrong. It is really cool. It is about a girl who discovers that she can see ghosts, but is sent to an asylum for shizophrenia. However, she discovers that she is a necromancer, and with the help of the other kids with powers there, she escapes. The first book leaves us with a GIANT cliffhanger, but the second book makes up for it. Everyone, i mean everyone, should read this book.

  27. however, for me the only series that will remain completely in my heart forever is Harry Potter. Those who haven’t read it, READ IT!!!!! Don’t be turned off by the pages, there is a reason why it is so famous! Though i didn’t like the ending, (wanted more death, i know, i know, it’s emo) it is a really fascinating read, and everyone should read it.
P.s. those who don’t read it because they think witchcraft = hell, should really reseach modern day Wicca and Witchcraft, and compare it to their religion, see what you like.
p.p.s i don’t mean that your religion is bad, i just like the meanings behind wicca better, so forgive me please for being prejudiced.

  29. The Hero with a Thousand Faces is a great book. I used it to write an essay in grade 9. It helped a lot. There is so much analysis of mythology and its relations to the modern world.

He takes the girl he like with him, and the ending is really sad. It’s still a very good series however, and it is called the TimeTrippers series by Stefan Petrucha.

They collect rocks that aid them with telepathy(it was taught to them by someone). I really don’t remember much, but they live in this big house by a loch/ lake? and they hear creepy things trying to communicate to them from the lake. I think the name of the book was something like “Under the Mountain” or “Beneath the Mountain”. If anyone knows what this book might be called, please tell. Its bugging me to remember the name!

There are some books in the world that a person in their lifetime should have read atleast once, maybe because its so well-written, or maybe because its an enriching experience. “Someday This Pain Will Be Useful To You” by Peter Cameron, is a book I think eveyrone should read, just because of its vivid quality. Cameron doesn’t use paragraphs of imagery, but his characters and their personalities are so very realistic, that you actually start believing that they exist.

I think all of those books have all the fundamental ideas that everyone will come across atleast once in their life. And because I love mysteries, I’d like to recommend any book by Agatha Christie, especially the Miss Marple stories.

There is also the Time Travellers series, whose plot is sort of similar. An author who writes really good teen romance is Meg Cabot. Oh, wait, there is a recent book i read called Reincarnation and it is amazing. It talks about how from the very beginning two people are reincarnating and they try to be together. These are some of the teen romance that i know. You should also try the Mango season though it is sort of like literature. There is some romance in the books written by Tamora Pierce, but it is mostly action like the series Kung-Fu Princess.

so i guess i would recommend:
    -Death Note (Tsugumi Obha)
a graphic novel that debates the question of justice in a controversial issue between two characters; and a twist of plot that always keeps you on the edge of your seat ;O
    – Uglies trilogy (Scott Westerfeld)
sci-fi novel that takes place 300 years from now where the world is completely transformed. a new operation that turns you ‘pretty’ when you’re sixteen isn’t as great as it seems.
    -Tuck Everlasting (Natalie Babbit)
a novel that questions eternal life leaving a character with the decision of living forever with the one she loves or walking away from it all.

  177. @P: Yup! “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte is a very awesome book! While I was reading, I somehow developed a bit of a crush on Mr. Edward Rochester… (Who is, in my opinion, quite cooler than Edward Cullen, despite sharing the same first name. No offense to the Twilight fans.) XP
“The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak is a great WWII book that I’d recommend, especially for those who enjoy historical fiction novels. Told in the perspective of “Death”, the story follows a young tomboy-ish girl named Liesel. She’s German and Christian — not the typical WWII heroine — and her foster paren’ts taken in a persecuted Jewish man, whom they hide in their basement.
Both books are a great read, if not a little slow at the beginning. 🙂

  183. I love Pride and Prejudice, one of my favourites by Jane Austen. The Scarlett Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne is also very very very good. I love anything by Margaret Atwood, currently reading Alias Grace and it’s keeping me on the edge. The “Castaways of the Flying Dutchman” series was a childhood favourite that I read many many times.

  185. You have to read Jane Austen. Her books are AMAZZZING!! Particularly Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion. They are my favourite books by her. Also, Harry Potter. I know, I know, it sounds so childish and cheesy, and you’ll probably laugh when you read this, but I am not kidding, these books are AMAZZZING!!! No joke, it’s not like abra-kadabra, tacky, little kid spells, they are REALLY good books with an amazing story line. The longer you read them (particularly when you get to “The Goblet of Fire” and the books after) the more you’ll like them. And then you’ll be sad they’re over. And let me just say, for those who have seen the movies, although they are really good, the books are a million times better.

  191. The book “Jinx” by Meg Cabot is also really good. I really enjoyed reading it. The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld is also a very good series that takes place in the future where everything has changed drastically. If you like books about romance then you will like The Immortals series by Alyson Noel. The Maximum Ride series by James Patterson is about a group of supernatural teens.
    TTYL 😉

The author basically talking about the religion “Islam” and how girls in schools get affected and hurt when others talk about the Hijab and how covering up for the girls is part of a huge deal in Islam. Muslim teenage girls and women get insulted alot in wearing the hijab and often get called as a terriost when wearing a Niqa’ab(Face cover that women often wear) .The author not only expressed deeply but inspired Muslim girls out there. The book is a really beautiful and peaceful book that i encourage anyone to read!
    P.S Keep on Reading

  199. “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is also a fantastic one. We studied it at school, and even with the homework assignments, etc. I still thought it was a very inspirational book.
It teaches a lot about racism, prejudices, innocence, and much more. I love Scout and Atticus Finch — they are such amazing characters.
The court scene is the best part of the entire story!! 😀
