Nonfiction of the Week for July 6th: Crap

July 7, 2009 | | Comments (126)

Book cover Our featured nonfiction book this week is Erin Elisabeth Conley's Crap: how to deal with annoying teachers, bosses, backstabbers, and other stuff that stinks.  Leo W, who chose the tongue-in-cheek high school survival guide, offers up some of his own high school dirt and invites you to share your own, as well as your thoughts about the book…

Okay, everyone has at least one crappy story about highschool and here is mine!

I joined the choir when I was in highschool because it offered an opportunity for me to travel to distance cities and performed at unique places such as at CTV studio, Skydome (Rogers Centre) and Pantages Theatre.  Unfortunately, to join the choir, you had to wear the dreaded bright red wool/cotton/polyester blend sweater and devote your whole highschool life in keeping it clean, fresh and away from water.

Ouf-of-shape-red-sweater

I was very good at keeping that promise until Grade 12 when I was too busy juggling between work, school and volunteering.  Needless to say, the sweater came out of the washer fuzzed up, and out of shape.  What’s more, the red sweater was leaving its marks by bleeding its red colour onto my other clothes!  As a result, I was kindly asked to stand in the ‘sweater challenged’ section at the back corner for the rest of the year.

Leo W was a librarian at Malvern.  He is now on a 6 months secret mission.

  1. School bothers me. Too much homework, no time for anything else. 40 hour work week? Not for students. HAHA. Some work overtime and get no pay. But, hey, at the end of the day, success gets a little closer. We just gotta look beyond the garbage we’re facing now and look forward. (Sort of like the situation with the garbage piling up). HAHA. Some kids don’t even have a chance to go to school. Now that stinks.

  3. I think that this book will be very fun to read. It may even help us in school and teach us a few lessons, such as don’t be careless of your choir clothes as the results can be you standing in the back coner!

  5. Haha, my choir clothes are also supposed to be kept in pristine shape. I’ve managed it so far, but I heard of a classmate who thought she lost hers before she found them rolled up and stuffed at the bottom of her locker. Needless to say, they had to be ironed. 😛

  9. This book sounds really funny, everyone needs a guide to tell them what to do during those “crap” times. Or just looking at someone else’s misery will make you feel better (come on, you know im right! :P)

  15. This book seems interesting, I know what it feels like to have a job, having to deal with school, my boss, and my siblings. I’m the middle child so typically it’s about my other siblings, but I don’t mind because sometimes I want my alone time. This seems like an interesting read though, I wouldn’t mind checking it out.

  25. This book seems interesting but I think the fact that you have to keep a sweater in that condition is pretty harsh…..i mean ….come on…..at least it should be better looking S=……anyways this book seems like a good book to read since I can relate to it( i hate school)(most of the time)……..school is irritating because I don’t get much time to do other stuff because of the painfully big amount of homework….i wonder what will happen next year

  33. Crap sounds really funny but fortunately,i don’t have any annoying teachers all my teachers are great and dedicated, i don’t have a boss, backstabbers? i’ve seen some and other stuff that stinks. This books sounds usefull and it might have other tips Leo offers. I’ve seen this book before somewhere.. i can’t remember but it looks familiar.I LOVE books that have problems that can be experienced in real life and another author that provides many other stuff like bullying, divources, fitting in, and peer presure is Jacqueline Wilson and her books are actully fiction and she gives a character that faces a problem! I look forward to finding out where i seen Crap before…..

  35. “Crap” sounds like a truly fun read! I will definitely read it 🙂
As for one of my own less-than-joyful experiences about high school… well, all I’m going to say is that I could probably write a book on embarrassing and awkward situations! 😛
Other than that, homework would definitely be the greatest stress-causing factor, for me and anyone else who knows the TRUE meaning for the word “Torture” (with a capital “T”)

  37. Well, with all the comments that were posted on this book, it seems like it will be very instersting. I know for a fact that most kids or teens have porblems once in a while with all the topic that are found in this book. School in generally can be very stressing especially with other things that may be happening at home. I cant wait to read it.

  43. Lol, that gave me a nice laugh… well to say the truth I also have a funny-embarrassing story. My teacher used to called me “sh*t”… yeah really! I was mad. And my friend started saying “Oh, sh*t! my pencil broke!” She used to say it on purpose, I know it. and hen I used to shout at her, “DON’T SAY SH*T!” and then she liked it and she kept saying it. And then this guy heard this and he kept saying sh*t… I was extremely embarrassed, and I just ran out of the classroom. I know that was wired, but I didn’t know what to do.

But hey- I can’t be the one to judge… maybe this book might be good. And alas, with the long list of other books that I plan to put on hold… Crap also comes on it 🙂

  49. I’m writing a story called:
    Applying for Ryerson Unniversity
I was applying for Ryerson Unniversity thinking to myself will I make it should I apply for another unniversity. Then I totally forgot about graduation getting my diploma leaving my friends and family behind. There were 5 days left f school and I went my two my two best friends, Alicia and Jessica, hesitantly about unniversity thinking to myself If I don’t get accepted to any school and yes I will have spend a year with kids younger than me and my friends are going to be off at colleges and unniversities building a great life for themselves while I might be stuck in high school for an extra year.
I woke up this morning I did my daily routine which includes eating my breakfast getting the mail and then I reaized there was an envelope from Ryerson Unniversity saying “Ellie Dona you have all the criteria were looking for you got accepted to Ryerson Unniversity ” I ran so fast to my paren’ts bedroom screaming and jumping on the bed I got into Ryerson Unniversity I’m smart. The first thing I did was call my two best friends screaming on the phone so they barely understood what I said what I said so then I repeated over ” I got in to Ryerson Unniversity”. Next thing you know I’m packing my bags filling my bags in my brothers trunk waving goodbye to my friends and my family saying “goodbye Edmonton hello Toronto!
