Fiction of the Week for July 20: The Devil’s Breath

Book cover

The Devil's Breath by David Gilman

The urban dictionary defines "devil's breath" as: "a noxious or toxic smell".

In terms of this novel by David Gilman it refers to the fact that our hero has uncovered an environmental polluter who is ruining the waters in Africa by dumping drugs and pharmaceuticals. But let's backtrack on this a little bit – how did our hero Max get from England to Africa?

Max is looking for his dad, Tom Gordon – who is missing and presumed dead. Max follows the paper trail to Nam-bia looking for him and brings along his computer whiz friend and a 17 year old female who is the co-pilot of the air-plane and they meet up with a native boy who they befriend there as they need his help.

This politically charged thriller can sort of be seen as James Bond Jr. Max and his friends get into many tricky and dangerous situations and they have to use their skills, cunning and wit to get out of . There are swarms of monkeys, gangs of bad guys, poisonous arrows, starvation, shape shifting and extreme weather patterns. They go through all of this in the hopes of finding Max's father and exposing the polluter and bringing them to justice.

This is an excellent novel, filled with danger and intrigue and keeps you reading. It can be seen as being a bit of a lighter read, but come on – its summer – what's wrong with a lighter read?

Jr. Mint is a youth librarian with the Toronto Public Library. He needs more free time to read.

  7. Wow, this book sounds really good.
And the definition for the title of the book is something I wouldn’t have thought had a meaning like “a noxious or toxic smell”. :-O

  27. I’ve just finished reading this book! It’s a really good book that reminds me of another called “The copper sunrise” in which my class read together at school. During reading, I felt worried for Max and his freinds through the dangers and hazardous parts.

  39. “Devil’s Breath” sounds scary but not the book but the title! But after reading the summary, i was like “wow this is nothing i thought it was!” i thought it was going to be scary involing a devil and something that was gonna be keep me up all not but its not! So yea, i think i could read this book since it involes danger and intrigue (i like those kinds of books) and reading the summary, its sounds like a book i will enjoy and it has alot of risky desicions and the characters could take any challenges thrown at them! So maybe i’ll see this book at the library or i could but it on hold? Well all i now is that i am going to give this book a read!

  43. Incidentally, there is also a series called “Young Bond” for those who want to read about this James Bond Jr.
Young Bond is basically about the teenage years of the real Bond and his exciting escapades. It’s nice for fans of Alex Rider.

Really, i have that kind of problem too, if a book doesn’t have any good romance in it and i mean the good kind not the wierd high drama one where the girl is with a guy but the guy is with to other girls, and the girl is also cheating with another guy. Nothing like that but the rea kind where it’s one girl and one guy then i wouldn’t even give it a double take
