Graphic Novel of the Week for July 27th: Runaways: Dead End Kids

July 29, 2009 | Word Out Team | Comments (164)

Book coverHelena returns to share her thoughts on this week's featured graphic novel, Runaways: Dead End Kids by Joss Whedon:

Runaways: Dead End Kids is about the children of the Pride (the villains of the Marvel comic universe) and how they rebel against their moms and dads by fighting for good and justice in the world.

In the book, the Dead End Kids accidentally zap their way back in time to 1907 New York, and it got me thinking about the nature of time travel.  Having faked my way through upper level science in high school and then gone all liberal-arts-y at university, I find physics pretty near incomprehensible.  How can you go back to a time when you haven't yet been born but you need to put a certain chain of actions in play in order for your mother to become pregnant with you?

Anyway, I went to the Internet for some instructional videos on time travel.  Here are two.  The first is from the Discovery Channel site and offers lots of information (although for me not much illumination) and the second is a silly spoof that is for your entertainment only.

And since we're talking about the past, here's a photo from the Ontario History Quest site (class photo day at Annette Street Public School right here in Toronto about a decade before the Dead End Kids land in New York).  Enjoy, history buffs 🙂

Helena is a teen librarian, but she reads widely – everything from teen coming-of-age stories to Agatha Christie to picture books about cars with her one-and-a-half year old son Lucas.

Yesterday I went on a trip to Scotters Roller Palace which was held at Missauga the program is held at Barbrum Frum library it’s called girls group it’s a great program because you get to tell them stuff and when you have problems at school they find ways to help you solve them. So I was watching this guy do a back flip and the splits with roller skates it was a great experience but while he did that I fell and broke my arm and had to get a cast but it was a great experience.

  23. I write this comment while reading this book. The title looks interesting. In our society a big problem is ‘Children of the Pride’.The children like that are very problem for the society. In their childhood, they never against their paren’ts and then when they become young they won’t look after their paren’ts. So that I think this story is good for all the children who look after or not their paren’ts. After reading this book surely I’ll go to the library and borrow the other book of the Runaways and read.

  25. This does seem like a really good series, and i think it’s mostly because of the reviews that i even give it a second chance and put a hold on it. but i think they should work a little more on the title page because it didn’t exactly capture my attention the first time

  27. I think for most readers what captures their attention first is the title and the title page if those aspects don’t capture the readers attention they won’t even give the back a read. i’ve even done that myself a lot. but in this case Runaway’s title page is lacking in appeal. i recommend people to read it ’cause so far i like how the story is going (I recently got the book yesterday)

  29. Dudes and dudettes! I am so happy to find that the library has the other Runaways books, I just finished Runaways: Live Fast, and was lamenting the fact that I had to go to the Merril collection to read the rest of the series. Before you all judge, I say you should read at least the first book in the series, Runaways: Pride and Joy. Nisal, the kids are not just rebelling against their paren’ts for the heck of it 😀 Their paren’ts were eeeeeevil people who wanted to annihilate the world and all of its inhabitants! So now, the kids are out and about protecting the innocents of their city, with a mash up of teenage angst and personal agonies. It’s a good read, funny and sometimes serious as well. There’s so much teenage angst, it makes me laugh. Hail Molly aka Princess Powerful on the cover of Dead End Kids!

  47. I read a graphic novel called the “Night Fisher” by R. Kikuo Jhonson. It is a story of a young boy named Loren who gets spoilt due to bad company.Due to his bad company,Loren experiences loss in every way. His family does not like him anymore, his A+ comes down to an F, his best friends do not talk to him anymore and gradually his health is also getting worse. At the end this bright and Rich boy dies by getting accused by everyone.
So, this gives us (youth) a morel that having a bad company or developing bad habits will always lead to a bad ending.

If you’ve watched the grave of the fireflies. it’s just as sad though it’s a movie it’s about this family that get’s torn apart only with a 8 yearold boy and and little sisters left alive and trying to survive the unforgiven circumcantes of that japanese war back in the day. throughout things get tougher and tougher and eventually both siblins die. but it was a very sad story and really shows people what a war can do to somebody who’s not even slightly related to the war other than haven’the misfortune of living where they were living
