What We Read Last Week – July 20

July 20, 2009 | Alan H. | Comments (176)

Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet (cover) I read a book somewhat different from my usual selection last week (it didn't have dragons, robots or superheroes, basically): Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet by Kashmira Sheth. It had such a great cover that it made me want to read the whole novel.

This is a "girl meets boy" coming-of-age story, but set in modern-day Mumbai, India, and with some complex themes of class, tensions between traditional and modern ways, and changing gender roles. The narrator is Jeeta, the youngest of three sisters, and she's a wonderful character who felt like a good friend by the time I finished the book.

I think one of the important things books do for us is take us within times, places and people different from the ones we're familiar with.  Highly recommended!  Kashmira Sheth has written several other young adult novels that I'm going to try and pick up as well.

Alan H is a web librarian at Toronto Public Library.  He reads all over the place.

  1. This book sounds interesting. It might not be a book I would pick up, but I could always try something new. Thanks for the recommendation!

  3. This book sounds incredibly interesting. I think I might like this more than some of the other books I’ve been reading. They’ve been quite shallow recently, so it’s nice to hear about one that seems to have a lot of depth!
Those are some cool henna designs on the cover, btw! I’m always so fascinated by how complex and elegant henna patterns look.

  5. I’m reading a book right now that’s also by Kashmira Sheth. It’s called “Keeping Corner”. It’s about a twelve-year old girl from Ghandi-era India. Married at the age of nine, Leela is in the highest class in the Indian caste system and never thought much of education. Then her husband dies and she is quickly thrust in the dark world of a child widow. She must shave her head, never wear jewelery, avoid parties and weddings, and continuously mourn for someone she barely knew. Then Ghandi comes along and a kind teacher helps her learn about his work, how it helps India and may also help her.
This book is realistic, captivating and showed me a world so different from ours. Read it!

  11. I actually read this book over a year ago.
I found it very interesting. The main character seemed to be rebellious in my view. I love the title of the book because it represents how people treat her.. Her skin is dark as a Koyal bird, but her heart is as sweet as a mango.. I found it too easy to read since it was under 200 pages or something but I would read more books by the author if I found it.

THe main character meets an old lady who keeps and recieves others’ letters to their dead relatives or family in a drawer ready to deliver the letters to those dead ones. It was a relly interesting book.

  37. I just finished L8r, g8r by Lauren Myracle. It is the sequel to TTFN, which was a sequel to TTYL. Like, the previous books in the triology, this was also written in instant messages. The book starts off with Zoe, Angela, and Maddie being in their senior year of high school. Since, it’s their last year of high school, they have too think about things in the future. Like, which college or univeristy they will be going to. However, the most important thing is that, since they will all be going to different places after high school they will have to end their group, “The Winsome Threesome”. This book was a satisfying read and I enjoyed it.

The tattoo is supposed to last three days, and Delia, the fashionable one thinks, that with those tattoo’s they’ll be a hit at the school dance. What they don’t discover till later that day, is that each tattoo gives each girl a unique power. Which they’ll have to use to save the world….in three days!

Well, yeah, last week I read The Eternal Smile by Gene Yang, illustrated by Derek Kim. It’s of three comics that end up subtly having the same theme of life and insight, sort of tying up in each other, yet still being completely different stories. It’s also from the author of American Born Chinese, and I remember that being really funny. Well actually, I liked that comic a lot more, but The Eternal Sunshine was good, and I really liked the illustrations, especially in the last comic. 😀
Now it’s back to reading and note taking.

Right now I’m reading tuesdays with morrie….its a good book soo far, not much is happening in it, its a true story (more like a biography) so its more abt how the narrator changes overtime as he learns many great life lessons from his dying proffessor…..
I usually read really fast specially if i get hooked onto a book but then i’ve been sooo busy during the summer with all the volunteering n stuff cuz i’ve got to finish my community service hours soon!!
so anyways and then after im done reading tuesdays with morrie, im gonna read emma by jane austen and then the notebook and then the books tht are on the booklist for the wordout program, as soon as i get them! got lots of reading to do!

This week I read Platinum by Jennifer Lynn Barnes and personally it was one of the best supernatural books that I have read. It’s about a girl called Lilah Covington who is the the most popular and the most beautiful girl at school. Plus, she’s a lot smarter than she let’s on. But, then her cousin’s Lissy and Lexie James move to town and looks like the James family’s legacy is about to live on. Like her cousins, Lilah also gets a supernatural power. Soon, she starts seeing things that aren’t there. She sees a (dare I say, very cute) ghost boy roaming around the halls and in her “visions” she sees the past! Even though “perfect” Lilah, has loads of talents; supernatural themes just aren’t her thing. At a time like this, what’s a girl gotta do to get her life back the way it was?

  99. I FINALLY managed to get a copy of this book! It’s really good so far! I love the writing style — it doesn’t sound superficial at all. All in all, the book doesn’t seem so much about “teaching you the culture”, but rather about describing the effects of war on a child.
For those of you who really enjoy “Koyal Dark, Mango Sweet”, you should read “Little Bee” by Chris Cleave. This five star (in my opinion, at least) fictional story is absolutely breathtaking as it describes in an honest and down-to-earth manner how the war in Nigeria is affecting people (specifically a 16-year-old Nigerian orphan girl and a well-off British couple).
    Happy Reading!
