What We Read Last Week – July 27
Last week I read Canadian author William Bell's The Blue Helmet, a short novel (166 pages) with deep themes (madness, youth violence, dealing with the death of a paren't). Loved it! A fast read that will get you thinking.
On a more general note, one of the reasons I still enjoy reading young adult fiction is it's one of the places where lots of short novels are still published (as opposed to 800 page tomes… though I read those too).
Alan H is a web librarian at Toronto Public Library. He reads all over the place.

Sounds like a great book and definitely something I’d like to read. By the way, I love William Bell’s “Just Some Stuff I Wrote”; it’s a quirky book of short stories.

I just read The Tsarina’s Daughter. It’s about the Romanov family that was murdered after being forced to give up their throne (you’ve probably heard of Anastasia and the search to find her bones, right?).
The book is written simply, like a children’s book, but it introduces some very deep concepts. I thought the author protrayed the irresponsibility of the Tsar very well, as well as the situation involving Rasputin. Just be warned, the book is sad and very realistic.

I just finished reading ‘The Kite Runner’ today, and all I have to say is that it is one of those few books(from all I’ve read so far) that is so vividly written that it just doesn’t leave you even you close the book. I think that there is a movie made on the book too, which I really want to watch. I highly, HIGHLY reccommend this book.

the book THE DEEP…is really
The third spellbinding story about Sapphy and Conor’s adventures in the powerful and dangerous underwater world of Ingo.
A devastating flood has torn through the worlds of Air and Ingo, and now, deep in the ocean, a monster is stirring. Mer legend says that only those with dual blood – half Mer, half human – can overcome the Kraken. Sapphy must return to the Deep, with the help of her friend the whale, and face this terrifying creature – and her brother Conor and Mer friend Faro will not let her go without them…
i really recomend this book to kids who like mystery…and sadness!!!!! really interesting!

i also read FLUSH!!!
Flush is everything a long-time Carl Hiaasen reader would expect, perfectly toned-down for a younger audience. It has all the mystery, suspense, and subterfuge of Hiaasen’s other novels, with a little more of what teens might like.
The protagonist, Noah Underwood, is a young teenager living with his family in the Florida Keys. Although the novel focuses on that area, there are many references to Miami throughout, like when Noah’s paren’ts meet at the Dade county courthouse and marry 6 weeks later. Noah’s father, Paine Underwood, is an adamant environmentalist with impulse-control problems. When he suspects a casino boat is pouring sewage directly into the pristine local waters, Paine sneaks in and sinks the vessel. He is taken to jail, leaving Noah, and his sister Abbey, to try and prove that the casino boat owner is the one polluting beaches and killing wildlife.
As usual, there are some shady characters, like Lice Peeking, so named because of his aversion to showers. He turns out to be a pretty good guy, helping the kids get on the boat and get information with the help of his bartender girlfriend Shelly.
There is also the casino boat muscle, a scar-faced man named Luno, who attempts repeatedly to kidnap Noah and Abbey, and a bully, Jasper Jr. Jasper’s dad owns The Coral Queen casino boat and he has a personal grudge against Noah after it sinks. He ambushes and beats on Noah every chance he gets. Although he has personal reasons for beating on Noah, Jasper Jr. represents what many teens face, and readers will be able to identify with Noah’s situation and his reactions.
Hiassen frequently showcases South Florida wildlife, as in scenes where Noah saves a scum-covered sea turtle, or bumps straight into a manatee. He fishes constantly throughout the book and the reader hears about snapper, tarpon, needlefish, blue crab, and many others which, of course, he usually throws back.
Young readers will quickly come to like Noah and his spunky sister Abbey. The two deal with bullying, school, and the possibility of their paren’ts’ divorce, all while solving an important mystery. This is a clever, well-written young adult novel that will encourage a new generation of Florida environmentalists.

Last week I read the book ‘Boy Toy’ by Barry Lyga and it was totally thirlling. This book has twisty turns. Older teens will find this book fascinating, distressing, ad worthy of their attention.
In this book a boy nameed Josh Mendel hass a secret. But unfortunately, everyone knows what it is.

last week I read “Bad Girls don’t Die” by Katie Alender…It’s her first novel but it was really awesome. Its a horror book with a little bit of romance, friendship and family relationships in it. I felt like watching a horror movie in TV instead of sitting down and leafing pages from book. i just don’t have words to describe it. you have to read it yourself to know it…so if you like story about souls with little bit of romance…go for it..

I read The Kite Runner a while ago and it was a good book, not something I would usually pick up but I did like it. However, sometimes I feel as though some people rave about a book because everyone else said it was so great.

To princess,
I really agree with you that some people rave about a book just because everyone says it’s great. One good example is Twilight. Frankly, I think it’s actually not the type of book that I’ll read.

the book….swindle is so kool…
i had to read it for a the silver birch passport thing and wow…mind blastin!!!!
After a mean collector named Swindle cons him out of his most valuable baseball card, Griffin Bing must put together a band of misfits to break into Swindle’s compound and recapture the card. There are many things standing in their way — a menacing guard dog, a high-tech security system, a very secret hiding place, and their inability to drive — but Griffin and his team are going to get back what’s rightfully his . . . even if hijinks ensue.
This is Gordon Korman at his crowd-pleasing best, perfect for readers who like to hoot, howl, and heist.
and bout the author!!!
Gordon Korman is one of the most beloved contemporary authors of today with more than 40 middle-grade novels to his credit. He published his first book at the wee age of fourteen, which turned into the Bruno and Boots series- still in print! Also a tireless self-promoter, Gordon’travels across the country and even travels abroad to promote his books. Originally from Toronto, Gordon and his wife, a teacher, now live on Long Island with their little boy.

another book i read for silver birch is….royal woods!!!
first i read the book and….bam…its the best book i ever read…
All it takes is one look for twelve-year-old Sydney and her nine-year-old brother Turk to know that everything has changed. The farm where their Uncle Frank and Aunt Lily used to live is gone, and along with it, their dreams of a “happily ever after.” No safe place to hide from all that had gone wrong in their world; no one to tell them that everything would be alright. No one, even, to say that hopping a freight train and heading West probably wasn”t the greatest idea they”d ever had. The farm had been their destination, but in its place was a strange new subdivision: The Royal Woods . Rather than return home and admit defeat, Sydney and Turk embark on the adventure of a lifetime in a world where fantasy and reality collide-where chickens ride ponies, where golf putters are magic, and where children survive on the strength of their own wits. In The Royal Woods , you never know what will happen next
and about the author…you won’t believe it!!!
MATT DUGGAN is from Alberta and grew up there and in Manitoba. He has taught high school in Bhutan and Canada, and has written extensively, including several award-winning screenplays, as well as short stories and articles that have appeared in such publications as Prairie Fire and Saturday Night magazine. He writes and teaches in Toronto, where he lives with his wife and two children. The Royal Woods was written for the amusement of his daughter, Mary June, and he is currently working on a novel for adults that she will not be allowed to read.

i also read swinlde a day ago to remeber the story well!!!
Griffin Bing had a plan. He invited everyone he could think of to a sleepover at the Old Rockford House. It was scheduled to be demolished the next day, but Griffin hoped to use the sleepover as a protest of sorts. He was very disappointed that only his best friend, Ben, showed up.
A group of the kids had the idea that the city could build a skate park on the property when the creepy old house was torn down, but the city officials had other ideas. They thought a museum was a better idea. Griffin had organized the sleepover hoping to get the attention their plan deserved. Instead, all he got was a night in his sleeping bag listening to his friend Ben snore.
Before leaving the old house, the boys did a little exploring. Griffin accidentally discovered a secret drawer, and tucked in that drawer was a card – an old baseball card with a picture of Babe Ruth. He was sure it was valuable and would help solve his paren’ts’ financial problems.
After a narrow escape from the wrecking ball, Griffin and Ben hurry to Palomino’s Emporium of Collectibles and Memorabilia to get the opinion of an expert. Much to their disappointment, S. Wendell Palomino gives them bad news. The card is a reproduction and worth very little. He offers them $120, and they take the money and run.
Imagine their surprise and fury when the nightly news is carrying the story of one S. Wendell Palomino and his incredible discovery of a valuable baseball trading card valued at $1,000,000. What follows is Griffin’s new plan to get back the card he believes is rightfully his.
Gordon Korman has once again created a story sure to captivate middle grade audiences. His adventurous characters, great use of humor, and non-stop action make SWINDLE great fun to read. The easy, fast-moving pace will hold the attention of readers of all levels and will also work well as a read-aloud in many classrooms.

The “House of Night” series by P.C. Cast + Kristen Cast is really good. I couldn’t put the first book down once I started reading it. I finished the 5th book in the series, “Hunted”, a while ago and now I can’t wait for the 6th one to come out! Anyone who loves vampires, or just loves a really addicting book should read this series!

i have really enjoyed reading the Midnighters trilogy by Scott Westerfeld. They are amazing books and he is one of my favourite authors
These books are about five teenagers living in Bixby Oklahoma. In this small town, every day at exactly midnight time stops, everyone freezes and technology shuts down. For an entire hour the midnighers have the town to themselves. They fight ancient creatures called darklings and explore the mysteries surrounding the town. With chapters from each of their perspectives the Midnighters Trilogy is an amazing, captivating, unique series that kept me glued to every page.

i just finished reading a book called “Pretty Little Devils”. it’s a book based on a group of friends who call them selves “the pretty little devils” they are the most popular group in their school. chloe’s been dying to be a part of their group and when the PLD’S invite her to a party, things couln’t look any better for chloe. however when all 5 friends start getting text messages and phone calls from an anonymous “killer” friends start to turn on each other. One of them is the killer, but who is it. A 5 star (in my opinion) of what true friendships really are–of course with a hint of mystery. once you read it, you won’t want to put it down.

I was reading “Just Some Stuff I Wrote” a few days ago, and it was pretty good. But, I wish they’d continued on the stories a bit longer. Anyways, that’s why they’re called short stories! There was one story which I didn’t quite get-“Chumley”-why was the boy pretending to be British??

Last week i read a book by Mark Twain called “The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer” Mark Twain is a famous American writer and this book which was Twain’s 1st full-length novel, was written in 1876. This book is about a boy whose mother is died. This the very interesting book. When i read this, sometimes i feel sad & sometimes very funny. I think this book is intended mainly for the entertainment of boys and girls. THINK YOU!!
