Fine Forgiveness Coupons

August 12, 2009 | Alan H. | Comments (88)

Hey Word Out-ers,

A quick anecdotal survey (our higher-ups are interested):

1) Have any of you used the $10 fine forgiveness coupon you get from signing up?

2) Have any of you been reading down your fines in participating branches?

Alan H. is a web librarian who knows that the plural of anecdote is not data, but sometimes finds them useful anyway.

  5. The REALLY sad( well, for me atleast) thing was, thAt just a DAY BEFORE I knew about WordOut!, I had paid all my fines. So, yeah, well, I almost always get fined at the wrong time or/ decide to pay up at the wrong time. Now my coupon(worth $10) will be wasted on my 60 cents of a fine. I just know that I’m gonna get fined again in winter…now call me a pshycic, or what.

  7. @S. Sivanesan: At branches participating in the Word Out program this year (and at some others, ask at your local branch) you can get coupons to lower your library fines by signing in with staff members when spending time in the library. You can get more details at your local branch, especially if they’re Word Out participants – https://blogs.tpl.ca/ysrc2009/participating.html

  11. I don’t have any fines so I didn’t have a chance to use it. But I think it was a good idea to get more teens to return to the library.

  15. It looks like alot of people don’t have any fines. I had like a 21$ fine once and I hadn’t lost any books. I had just borrowed way too many. It’s too bad I didn’t have this coupon.

  19. It sucks for some people though, like one of my friends, she had taken out like 24 manga books cause they were one continuous series, and she was almost 2 weeks late returning them and had to pay $50. But she used the coupon, so she only paid $40…it helped. So again, thank-you library people 😀

  21. I used the $1 coupon because if you have stayed in a particpating library branch for one hour or more, you get a $1 coupon. If you stayed in the library for 2 hours you get 2 $1 coupons and yea so i got a $1 coupon and i have stayed in the library for more then one hour so i have about 4 or 5 $1 coupon that i don’t need. So yea that coupons are a really great idea!

  25. Hi June well Word Out!2009 basically recommends books for teens that many of us can relate to, or that we will enjoy so every week one non-fiction, one fiction book, and one graphic novel book is recommeded like for example this weeks “Click: The Ultimate Photography Guide for Generation Now” is the Non-fiction for the week, and the graphic novel of the week is “Zot” so on the left side of this page, on the very top there is something titled “Recent Post” and under it is some headlines and if you want to see what the nonficition for this week is, you click “Nonfiction of the Week for August 10” and there is a summary of the book sometimes there is an interview of the author so if the bok interests you, you put it on hold and you can comment on the books you can write down complients for the book or questions which the Word Out! 2009 staff can answer.Every week a draw gets held and there are four winners every week who win really cool stuff!

  27. @June: This week and the next are the last two weeks of the official program. The week following that will probably have some wrap-up before I put the site into an archival mode (turn commenting off basically) so we’ve got a full record of the summer’s activities.
@Hamdi: Great explanation, saved me some typing. Thanks! 🙂

  37. I don’t understand one thing… Why would you offer the $1 coupons for reading at the branches? It seems much easier to me to just print out the $10 coupon online. You might want to switch the payouts for each option.(i.e. $1 coupon for online and $10 coupon for reading).
