Fiction of the Week for August 3: Wake

August 3, 2009 | Margaret | Comments (176)

Book cover

Wake by Lisa McMann is our featured Fiction this week.  We had some interesting things happen around it last week already (and  rumour has it there may be a little more to come along those lines), and selector Margaret here to tell us more about the winner of our BATTLE OF THE BOOKS

Poor Janie Hannagan.  All she wants is to get through high school as normally as possible, but she can’t.  She has a very special ability.  Janie can see other people’s dreams, every wonderful, embarrassing, weird or just plain scary moment.  Janie is not too happy about her power as it complicates her life big time, especially her growing relationship with mysterious Caleb, but in the end it comes in handy…

Would you like the ability to see other people’s dreams? If you could have a power or special ability, what would it be?  Read minds (like a certain sparkly vampire)?  See the future?  Invisibility? X-Ray vision?

You can place a hold on the sequel to Wake, Fade, through the library catalogue and look for the third book in the series, GONE, to come out in February.  For lots of neat stuff like audio commentary by author Lisa McMann, desktop wallpapers, screen savers and even your own dream journal stationery, check out Lisa’s website www.lisamcmann.com.

Margaret G is a teen librarian who wishes you all sweet dreams.

  1. I really can’t wait to get my hands on this book it seems so fatanacing. Hmm i guess if i had any special powers that’s tough maybe to shape shift into anything i want. Or maybe to become super smart so i can build all types of things. that’s really hard though

  11. “Wake” sounds like a magical book that not only fantasy lovers would like to read, but everyone would like to read. Janie sounds very lucky and unique. I think that if you see other people’s dreams, it might be cool so maybe the dreams realte to real life right? So i would probably love to have that abilty. I can’t wait too see this and i also can’t wait to see the what Janie does too seem normal. If i had any power in the world it would be to read people’s thought even though its disturbing someone’s privacy… people can just be a little curious right? I’ve read a book i forgot whats it called.. but its about a girl who’s mom died and one day,her mom visits her at midnight on her birthday and for one year until her next birthday, she gets to go 15 seconds back in time. And its a funny book and she gets to being a geek into a popular girl who knows the good gossip before anyone (thanks to going back in time) and yea so i will try and remember whats its called. So thats story is similar to “Wake”. So i will try to find the book. A question: is the book continued and like the sequl is going to revel whats going to happen next. Lisa McMann sounds unfamilar i don’t think i read a book by her 🙁 but yea i will try to find Wake!!

  25. Oh and the bookmark thing is related to the top secret thing on this website. you have to go to your local library to get a book mark. and if you collect all 8 it spells out a secret title that’ll give you one extra chance in winning a prize.

The only thing I am wondering about is what sort of effect the book might have on younger readers, because some of the images in the novel were very chilling. And I happen to be a night owl and read – and finished in one sitting, it was just that good – the book before I fell asleep. Well, let’s just say … a book about dream walking girls and poor little me on the verge of sleep, don’t go well together LOL. That being said, I re-read the book a couple of days later anyway. I absolutely cannot wait for Fade!! 🙂

  55. I like Lisa McMann’s plot of the story Wake. I think its very interesting (and no doubt frightening) to be living Janie’s life. It would be interesting because Janie could figure out people’s personalities(especially the mysterious or insecure types who have more to them than they put on). It would be frightening but helpful if she saw dreams of a criminal mastermind or a terrorizing figure and help the police to catch them before they commit the crime.

Besides the power that would give you all powers, i think that i would want to be able to read peoples minds. it would be really awesome to be able to find out what the people around you were thinking. 🙂

Plus I want people to ask “Is that a bird? A plane?…” When they see me in the sky 😛

Most of the TPL staff involved in Word Out are teen services librarians or otherwise have a job specifically focused on teens.
