Computer Classes in Other Languages
The Toronto Public Library offers a
wide variety of computer classes. These
range from beginner classes such as Move That Mouse or Web Basics, to more
advanced classes such as those on how to use Google Docs or LinkedIn. The vast majority of these classes are
offered in English, and timings vary across city branches.
Toronto is one of the most culturally
diverse cities in the world. It is no
surprise then that it is also one of the most linguistically diverse cities as
well. Statistics Canada has identified
about 160 mother tongues in the Toronto Census Metropolitan Area. Within the city itself, according to the 2011
Census, 45% of residents had a mother tongue other than English or French. Moreover, 5% of Torontonians had no knowledge
of either official language.
It is with these demographic statistics in
mind, that librarians across TPL have started to offer computer classes in
other languages. The trend is just
starting, but hopefully it will prosper and continue. Anyone is welcome to attend these free
classes, and only a quick registration might be required.

Thank you for this info. I know a few people who may be interested in the Urdu classes. Will more be offered?
This is great information, thank you. I feel obliged to point out, however, that “other” is perhaps not the best word choice here because it can imply something that is different than “normal” and therefore inferior and so on. (See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Other.) May I suggest using “many languages” or “multilingual” or “international” or something like that?
This is very good now you can get the training of the Computer in any language you want. Thanks for this article. !!
