A Visit with Red Maple Nominee Valerie Sherrard
Thanks to the support of the Canada Council for the Arts through the Writers’ Union of Canada, Bridlewood Branch was able to host Red Maple Fiction Nominee Valerie Sherrard. At this Author Visit, which took place on Monday, May 12, Ms. Sherrard spoke about her life as a Children’s writer and her nominated book, Counting Back from Nine.
The novel is in free verse but it was originally written in prose. Ms. Sherrard explained that during the editing process, she was compelled to change the style of the book. She felt that poetry was a better fit for the story’s tone and subject matter.
Ms. Sherrard also shared some great advice about writing and life in general.
An enthusiastic group of Grade Seven and Eight students from J.B. Tyrrell Senior Public School joined us for this program. As participants in the Ontario Library Associations’ Forest of Reading Program they came prepared with thoughtful questions and their love of reading.
Counting Back from Nine is an emotional, thoughtful read and is available at Toronto Public Library. Click to place a hold on this celebrated piece of Canadian fiction.
