Lena Horne
The wonderful Lena Horne has just died. A ground breaking pioneer within the film and music industries as a black female performer Lena Horne challenged stereotypes but at the same suffered from them.
She wrote her own life story in the 1960s and several other biographies were written about her later. Her daughter wrote a family biography as well.
There is a video of her early 1980s show for which she received a special Tony award. She is presented with her peers in the video Great Black Women and on the DVD Sarah Vaughan : and other jazz divas. As well, there are many Youtube clips of her performing and her various renditions of Stormy Weather are legendary.
Her poise, her beauty and her voice were legendary and there are many CDs of her singing:
- The fabulous Lena Horne [sound recording] : 22 hits 1936-1946
- Lena Horne, a [musical] anthology
- The classic Lena Horne
- Billie, Ella, Lena, Sarah
